The sixth season of the Gigabyte Mineski Pro Gaming League (GMPGL) will start this weekend, with Dota 2 serving as the banner game. For the first time since its conception, there will be no more WC3 DotA on that league.
As usual, the GMPGL will follow a promotion-demotion system, wherein the the best teams are placed on class S and the underperforming teams being seeded into class A. However, the organizers have decided to have everyone start off with a clean slate, and all teams are seeded into the the lower class instead of inviting teams over to join the elite group. Thus, the top eight teams for this month will advance into class S for next month.
The tournament will take advantage of the local play feature of the game, as most games will be played on that setting. Exception are the cross-region matches, which would be limited to only a few matches on the second day. The teams are to choose among the 16 available Mineski branch on where they will play, and the top two teams per branch will advance into the top 32 teams the day after. More than 480 teams have enlisted so far.
This month's tournament will have a $750~ prize pool, but it will be diluted because everyone from the top 32 will get at least a small portion on the pool. When the premiere division arrives next month, another $600~ in prize would be separately allotted for the teams there.
Last year's GMPGL was played across SEA, featuring local tournaments for at least five other countries (MY, SG, VN,TH, ID). The LAN finals of that league, the GMPGL SEA, was largely considered as a success. It is still unknown whether there will be another GMPGL season for those countries this year.
