Diego "Raspot" Echeagaray was according to the WCG rules ready for the playoffs. But the administrator's decision was to have a tie-breaker, which eventually saw Raspot get eliminated.
Group F turned out to be another tight story. Diego "Raspot" Echeagaray was able to score a 4-2 result, winning against Yaraslau "NightWOlf" Kavetski and Hamish Luke "Kowi" Parker. The Group F top dog, Nikita "Nicker" Pomadov managed to stay out of the tiebreaker debacle after a 5-1 result thus advancing directly to the playoffs. But the remaining two players NightWOlf and Kowi also landed on a 4-2 score.
The administrators then called for a three-way tiebreaker, as the three contenders landed on the same score. The first tiebreaker did not come across any winner, every player going 1-1. The second tiebreaker proved decisive, as Belorussian player NightWolf went 2-0 - which meant that Kowi and Raspot got eliminated.
However, according to the World Cyber Games rules this was a faulty outcome.
First Phase
- A Group Draw, held on Oct 2nd 2008 shall determine the composition of each group.
- Map cycle will be notified on Oct 10th 2008 through the WCG website.
- The host and client for each match will be decided by Referee.
- In the first phase, each player plays one match against each of the other players in the same group, with three points for a win and none for a defeat.
- The league system ranking in each group is determined as follows;
a) greater number of points obtained in all the group matches;
b) greater number of points obtained in the group matches between the players concerned in the tiebreaker;
- Should only two players be tied in their group after applying the above-mentioned rules, a single game rematch shall take place
- Should three or more players be tied in their group after applying the league system ranking rules, another league system group ("rematch group") shall be played among the players concerned.
- Ranking in the "rematch group" shall be determined as follows:
a) greater number of points obtained in all the group matches;
b) greater number of points obtained in the group matches between the players concerned;
c) rematch continues until winner determined;
- The two players coming first and second in each group qualify for the second phase.
According to Rule b) in the league system ranking, the Mexican player Raspot should be regarded as the runner-up of Group F. Earning wins over both his opponents while the others only have a 1-1 and 0-2 score, it should be obvious that Raspot won it.
What the tournament administrator's final decision is is unknown, but for the StarCraft tournament which also holds a couple of erroneous decisions, these mistakes will not be changed and the "official" playoff tree is final.
