VCT Champions 2022 – Playoffs: The APAC dream lives on as DRX beats Fnatic

The European team unfortunately will be packing home after their run at Champions.

It was a tense moment for APAC fans as DRX was the last team representing the region at Champions. They met up with Fnatic in the Lower Bracket quarterfinals to see which one would be heading back home after spending over two weeks in Istanbul.

The game started with Icebox, with Fnatic opening strong by winning the first four rounds before DRX managed to get their first win. Even so, Fnatic led the first half with two points by the end of the first half. They continued their winning streak into the second half and wrapped up the match by round 20, scoring 13-7.

Ascent is where DRX rose to challenge Fnatic. While the latter was leading by the end of the first half, the Korean team managed to equalise the score by round 17 in the second half. The two teams then trade blows to round 24, where the official match ended with a tie. Overtime was then called. BuZz and stax were the MVP in overtime as they each scored the winning kill in the two overtime rounds – stax’s final kill was more memorable as he killed Alfajer - the Turkiye-born Fnatic player.

Everything boils down to Fracture – and the boys from South Korea still felt the adrenalin from winning the previous map. They went on the offensive in the first half, but Fnatic was pushing enough that they tied by round 12. Undeterred, DRX continued their pushing in the second half, as the two teams played a game of ping-pong to see who could emerge victorious. In the end, it was DRX, because as the fat lady sang on round 22 – it was all over for Fnatic. DRX won 13-9.

With this win, DRX has finally secured their highest placement on the international stage. The dreams of an APAC team winning the Champions is still alive – but DRX will be facing some tough challenge in the Lower Bracket Semi-finals as they will have to face the winner of the match between XSET and FunPlus Phoenix. Fnatic ended their Champions Istanbul journey with a bang - to the delight of the fans at the venue and online.
