GOMTV StarCraft 2 Open Ro8 Day 1 - Live Report

We have already reached the quarter finals, and the we're starting the week with a live report from today's matches, deciding who will move on to the semi finals.

GSL Season 3 - Quarter finals
December 6th, 11:00 CET
South Korea IMNesTea2-3South Korea TSL_Rain
South Korea FruitDealer2-3South Korea HongUnPrime

13:46 - That's all for today, tune in tomorrow for the live updates of Choya vs Jinro, and MarineKing (aka FoxeR) vs MC. Two TvPs!

13:44 - HongUn interview:

honguninterviewro8.JPG

Q: You defended beautifully in game four on Lost Temple, is that something you've done before, or something you made up as the game went on?

It's obviously not a situation you see every day, and I had no choice but to warp in buildings to defend myself, and the only reason we came to that situation was because my opponent was FruitDealer

Q: Do you have any other goals than beating FruitDealer and making carrires? (his earlier, achieved goals)

I'm happy that I achieved my goals, and the only goal I can think of now is to be the first Protoss to win a GSL

Q: Do you have anything to say to your large foreign fan-base?

I'm grateful that there are so many people outside Korea cheering for me, and I will do my best to make them happy

13:39 - Tomorrow's games:

tomorrowsgamesro8gsl3.JPG

13:32 - No evolution chamber, nor a lair is up for FruitDealer while the dark templars are on their way.

The evolution chamber has just been started, dark templars cutting their way through zerglings. Spore is soon up in the main of FruitDealer, but it goes down before it finishes.

GG from FruitDealer, both of the champions are out, no more Zergs in the tournament, and HongUn moves on! 3-2!

hongunro8win.JPG

13:30 - FruitDealer has now made a hatchery at the expansion, while HongUn has two gases running and is making a Twilight Council. Dark templars, blink or charge-lots?

***

The answer; Dark Templars.

13:27 - Game 5 - FruitDealer vs HongUn

FruitDealer spawns in the bottom left position of Blistering Sands, and we have HongUn, obviously, in the top right.

13:23 - FruitDealer is breaking the wall of HongUn, while HongUn just now got his vod ray out, and while he's walling up over and over, the void ray slowly cleans up the zerg army.

hongundefendingro8.JPG

HongUn holds it off, and is now moving in three void rays. Four queens there to defend him.

voidrayhongunro8.JPG

The void rays does the job, and GG from FruitDealer, and another fifth deciding match today.

13:20 - HongUn pushed a probe up on the cliff of FruitDealer's base by making a pylon pushing him, and gets to scout the Zerg base and sees the lair going up. Roaches are out, and the roaches and zerglings broke down the block of his ramp.

Now moving out, firing at the forge at the Protoss wall.

13:18 - Game 4 - FruitDealer vs HongUn

The fourth game is on Lost Temple, FruitDealer in the top mid again making the pool first. HongUn in the right position.

HongUn is blocking FruitDealer's ramp with two pylons and a cannon again, and gets the nexus at his expansion.

In the meanwhile, this drone is eating fruit;
droneeatingfruit.JPG

13:14 - FruitDealer breaking rocks between them, HongUn trying to get cannons up, but FruitDealer breaks the rocks, and there's not much HongUn can do.

fruitdealergame3ro8.JPG

GG from HongUn, 2-1 for FruitDealer.

13:09 - Game 3 - FruitDealer vs HongUn

The third game is on Shakuras Plateau, horizontal positions, with FruitDealer in the top left, and HongUn in the top right.

***

HongUn is making a fast expansion, while FruitDealer again made the pool first, and is now getting a roach warren.

12:58 - HongUn now engaging, while FruitDealer researched burrow for his banelings, got them burrowed, but they were not enough for the protoss army.

burrowedboomro8.JPG
The burrowed banelings exploding

FruitDealer realized it was not enough, and GG'd. 1-1.

12:57 - FruitDealer has started making drones now, but HongUn got a major league after he relied too much on that bust. HongUn now moving out with a lot of units, breaking the rocks between them.

hongunbreakingrocks.JPG

12:53 - HongUn is going for a fast expansion with forge and cannons up for defense. FruitDealer did not make a fast expansion actually, and made a 14 pool instead, and is behind now in this game.

***

FruitDealer is actually making a lot of zerglings and a baneling nest, and will most likely go for a bust.

fruitdealerbanelingsro8.JPG

FruitDealer manages to bust the front of the Protoss, and gets a lot of zerglings into the Protoss base, but HongUn holds on.

12:50 - Game 2 - FruitDealer vs HongUn

The second game is on Scrap Station with FruitDealer in the top position, and HongUn in the lower position.

12:47 - HongUn is now engaging with all of his units, going for the kill, and it looks like he will succeed. Void rays are down, and when it all looked so good for Aiur, the FruitDealer held on and pushed back the remaining stalkers.

FruitDealer counterattacks, and HongUn GGs. 1-0 for the season 1 winner.

hongunengagero8.JPG
The protoss force was not enough against the FruitDealer.

12:45 - The hydralisks kill the pylon by the stargates, while the void rays delay the expansion hatchery for FruitDealer.

hydraskillstargates.JPG

***

Void Rays forces another cancel from FruitDealer.

voidraysdelayhatchro8.JPG

12:43 - HongUn currently has two void rays, getting another one along with a phoenix while FruitDealer is getting his hydralisks.

***

A lot of hydralisks are out, and HongUn pulls back his forces. A very nice counter from FruitDealer.

12:42 - HongUn is now hiding two stargates below the main of FruitDealer, but an overlord spots one of them.

Fruitdealer is now making a hydralisk den to counter the void rays coming at him any minute now.

hiddenstargatesro8.JPG

12:37 - Game 1 - FruitDealer vs HongUn

The first map is Steppes of War, the FruitDealer spawned in the top right corner as the red Zerg, HongUn, the blue Protoss, in the bottom left.

***

A forge goes up first for HongUn, and he's blocking the Zerg ramp with two pylons now, with a photon cannon behind them.

pylonblockro8.JPG

12:36 - Fun facts from Tasteless and Artosis saying the fruit lime actually is illegal in Korea, and you get a lemon with your corona.

In the meanwhile, the players are about to get ready:
fruitdealervshongunro8.JPG

12:31 - We have FruitDealer vs HongUn, and Tasteless brought a banana for this game. Got your fruits?

1e301fb91ea75a7a0eed5072e10e83f0ffcecd13a37ea89efb01a91696.jpg

12:30 - Rain interview:

Q: NesTea is known for his outstanding macro, did you do the all-ins because you don't feel confident against his macro in the later game, or was there any other reason?

I originally planned to do macro games only, but for private reasons I had to rely on all-ins

Q: Did you practice against FruitDealer for this match since he is your teammate, and it's possible you meet him in the semi finals

FruitDealer was busy preparing for his own round of eight, but he gave me a lot of good advice

Q: What Zergs were you practicing against then, meeting up with the reigning champion?

I practiced against TSL_Pretty

12:23 - Great job holding on for NesTea, but it was just not enough after falling behind after the bunker push, and GG's, 3-2 for Rain, a major upset in the round of 8 as Rain moves on to the semi finals.

12:20 - NesTea is getting a lot of banelings now, but Rain has a lot of units engaging now. The banelings must do a really good job to make this happen for NesTea.

***

NesTea does a decent job, Rain survives the first push, but his marines used a lot of stim and took some damage, and NesTea is still holding on in this game.

b93484e63260ee5db523945e35915ce89740476cbd2bcfb70aa8f2fccd.jpg

12:15 - The bunker gets repaired while the spine crawler goes down, and this is looking really bad for the champion of season two.

25100a6dfe46a515d2ec4e7635e5537bd9bbbc77bce209b06c31860dfd.jpg

The expansion for NesTea is not doing anything. NesTea has a lot of zerglings though, will try to counter attack Rain, but Rain has walled in his base, and is going in for the kill, inside the Terran base with his marines now, though Zerglings clean it up.

Rain has his expansion up now, but there is a theoretical possibility for NesTea to come back in this game, but the chances are slim.

12:11 - Game 5 - NesTea vs Rain

NesTea spawns in the bottom left, and Rain in the top right of Xel'Naga Caverns.

***

The game is starting out like the other two games Rain has won in this series, Rain doing two barracks. Different this time though, is that Rain is pushing out with bunkers.

1b38d5394c0a4992d3a876d54be9067d6a30ef7141bdae0a17f1a86fea.jpg

12:08 - All-in from Rain now, doing a great job, NesTea losing his spine crawler and his zerglings, but does not have a lot yet. Seems like Rain will go to the fifth game against the reigning champion.

GG, 2-2, and we're going to the fifth and final game of the series.

ff3aad682df058ad1ba4e0f5516643adfe95736822a9ad417d4b7902bb.jpg

12:07 - Rain is pressuring with marines and a couple of SCVs, and is putting down two more barracks, which makes a total of four barracks. We'll see some very heavy pressuring from Rain soon.

12:04 - Game 4 - NesTea vs Rain

The fourth game in this best of five series is on Blistering Sands. We have the red Zerg, NesTea, in the top right position, and Rain, the blue Terran, in the bottom left position.

***

NesTea is getting his hatchery up first, while Terran has not made a refinery yet.

12:00 - While Rain continues his push towards the fourth base, NesTea counter attacks the expansion of Rain, killing off a lot of SCVs

476706ea5cb7338c4c11c9daeca6ee4dc29b1d4b7b981d7d165e721ce5.jpg

Rain is now far behind, only got his third base up, but lost a lot of SCVs to the couner attack. NesTea in the meanwhile is taking his fifth base.

***

GG from Rain, 2-1 for NesTea.

11:57 - Rain taking down the rocks of his second entrance, and on his way to taking down the rocks leading to NesTea's fourth base, mutalisks force him to turn back.

Now he's back at the fourth though, moving out with a huge army, while the swarm is waiting with a lot of banelings. NesTea kills a decent amount of the army, but Rain is still alive, but it's not enough to engage as more banelings and mutas are incoming.

5ea2493dddcb8806b81f7b3e818e34c1b8948d9ebd8f4ae999e4ef1fd7.jpg

11:54 - Rain is now moving out, killing three overlords on his way, supply blocking NesTea. Rain catches a lot of zerglings off-guard, but at the same time putting himself in a corner for the banelings.

He did however get out of there alive, and didn't lose as many marines as one would first think.

88d1d635c94779977eca87f79e67807c170f02955e00cdeab241f12f4d.jpg

11:52 - A big push from NesTea, with tons of banelings, engage the Terran base, but with good micro, Rain didn't take any huge amount of damage, only suffering the stims he had to use.

431e2b38a9e44df9f5905e27380886a1b752b98fae8c930efc028fd786.jpg

11:49 - Rain is getting an expansion now, while NesTea's is already up and running.

***

NesTea is getting a very early third-base, while Rain is getting a lot of barracks. In the meanwhile NesTea got a nice surround on a group of marines, and now counter attacks Rain with the zergling, and things are again not looking good for Rain.

11:45 - Game 3 - NesTea vs Rain

After a commercial break we're finally back, getting ready for the third game in this best of five. We're on Shakuras Plateau, it's diagonal cross positions, NesTea bottom right, and Rain in the top left.

11:34 - Rain is sending SCVs as well as marines now, only drones there to defend, this comes down to micro. Zerglings are now out.

Queen goes down, nice micro from Rain and GG from NesTea, 1-1.

11:32 - Game 2 - NesTea vs Rain

The second game is on Steppes of War with NesTea in the top right, and Rain in the bottom left position.

***

NesTea opens with an early hatchery, while Rain is making a barracks out of his base, closer to the middle, to get on the early pressure.

11:30 - While NesTea is doing harassment in Rain's main, the Terran decides to counter attack, and does not care about his own base.

***

7e8a64c3912f7165c7d768a2d5f3ce72ad71a560807ef03ab37a133db4.jpg

A ton of units engaging Rain's army, and NesTea gets the best of him, taking the first game. GG, and 1-0 for the reigning champ.

11:24 - Some big blunders from NesTea, lost a few mutalisks on move command over the marines and vikings while Rain pushed out, and some good micro prevented the banelings from doing anything huge to stop the push.

d8c8adb9bdc13061ce31fbb36f3514a53aaa303e07e0e0f54e829841a8.jpg

Rain actually is in the lead now, looking to take this game, but he is still on two-bases. He killed the second base of NesTea, and from the cliff he's now harassing the golden expansion as well. He's sending reinforcements, and is taking out the rocks at his golden expansion.

***

NesTea's macro is incredible though, and has 40 supply more than Rain.

11:22 - NesTea has a lot of mutalisks, got his third and golden expansion up and is making his fourth, while Rain is still at two bases, and it's not looking good for the Terran.

11:20 - NesTea got his mutalisks out in time, before his hatchery went down. Rain tried to drop the cliff as a lot of zerglings cleaned up the bunker.

Now NesTea has a huge lead with a lot of mutalisks.

11:18 - Rain is getting ready to cliff-drop NesTea, medivak is out and loaded a siege tank while four marines are on their way as well. Will NesTea hold off this pressure?

It seems like Rain is doing a bunker/tank push instead of dropping the cliff.

11:14 - Game 1 - NesTea vs Rain

491a93197391c3481473ff055461cb29cad917ffae43a509a4430392da.jpg

The first game is on Lost Temple, we have NesTea as the red Zerg at the 9'O clock position, while Rain, the blue Terran, is at the bottom mid position.

11:01 - Mok-Dong Studio, finally! Artosis got his hair cut, and Tasteless got himself a new pair of converse shoes.
