GSL May: Up and Down Groups C and D Reports

Match 1 TSL_aLive versus ZeNEXByun

Game 1 @ Tal'Darim Altar

The first game of the day was a long Terran versus Terran between aLive and Byun. Both players took early expos, but it was aLive's Banshees that helped tip the game in his favour early in the game. His air superiority allowed him to push all the way to Byun's base and the game would be tilted in aLive's favour until the end. The game was drawn out as aLive would never be able to use his advantage to destroy Byun completely, but he did in supply the entire game. However, aLive would eventually take the first game with a final battle in the middle of the map.

Game 2 @ Terminus RE

Game two looked like it would have ended quickly with a win for aLive, but aLive's one base push did not finish Byun off. After defending aLive's timing push at the 9 minute mark, Byun had very little problems getting back into the game with his early expansion. Despite losing a lot of units from aLive's push, Byun's economy was even with aLive's one base. aLive's window to take the game early closed and the game quickly switched to a much longer macro game. Byun took a lead in supply and did not let it go. It looked like aLive was in the lead with each engagement, but Byun had the lead in supply the entire time. The killing blow would be Byun establishing a beach head in aLive's main by dropping Marines and tanks to cut off reinforcements from aLive's main army. With no reinforcements and a much smaller force than Byun, aLive quickly gg'd.

Game 3 @ Dual Site

The series thus far had been a long TvT after long TvT and the third game was no different. Both players would go with very similar openings that they had used the previous two games with aLive going Banshees and Byun dropping an early expansion. The game was very close as both players won and lost engagements equally. It came down to who was the better harasser as Byun was able to constantly take out aLive's SCVs at aLive's expansions. The game ended quickly after aLive made the mistake of moving his main army away from his only mining expansion. This game Byun the chance to move in with a small force to take out almost 3/4 of aLive's SCVs. aLive's main army had been sent to take out Byun's gold expansion, but Byun had very few SCVs at his gold expansion. Short on resources and no expansions, aLive would gg and Byun would come back to take the match after losing the first game.

Match 2 TSL_aLive versus CheckPrime.WE

Game 1 @ Tal'Darim Altar

Compared to the first few matches of the day, game 1 of this series ended quite fast. aLive would sneak several Hellions into Check's base and cripple his economy early on. The Hellion harass was enough to give aLive the lead and he simply just tank pushes his way to a win. There was very little Check could do as the Hellion harass had set him back in economy and army. The simple tank push by aLive was just too strong.

Game 2 @ Crevasse

Game 2 lasted much longer than the first. Both players used some standard harassments. Check used his Mutalisks to harass while aLive made drops. The game was fairly calm other than the harass that both players made. They played a fairly safe game with Check taking expansions and aLive denying them. Both players would max out at one point and it would be bad news for Check since at that point he was not able to expand without having aLive snipe the expansion easily. Check would not be able to counter by denying expansions or pushing out and eventually would lose 2-0 to aLive.

Match 3 SlayerS_Ryung versus oGsMC

Game 1 @ Crossfire

Ryung looked like he had won the first game in the match early on with a very strong Banshee, Siege Tank, and Marine push. He would park himself outside MC's base and slowly push closer and closer, but MC would not fall that easily. At one point it seemed like Ryung had stalled his push which gave MC just enough time to mass the right amount of units. A large army of Zealots, Stalkers, and Immortals would make quick work of Ryung's push and Ryung would GG quickly after.

hnice] The second game between the two players played out well into the late game. Other than the Banshee harass by Ryung, there was very little action. Ryung would try a very powerful Marauder drop supported by a Raven and a few Banshees. He could have probably sniped MC's main Nexus, but did very little damage otherwise and even lost his Raven in the drop. He would attempt one more drop before MC finally decided to move out. It would be a very one sided tilt as MC threw down Psi Storms and Feedbacked Medivacs. There was very little Ryung could do as MC rolled over him. <img src=

Match 4 SlayerS_Ryung versus HongUnPrime.WE

Game 1 @ Dual Site

The first game ended quickly as HongUn Voidray rushed an unsuspecting Ryung. There was very little that Ryung could do as he scanned the Stargate at the last minute. Up until then Ryung had been producing Marauders expecting more Stalkers than air units. HongUn would make quick work of Ryung.

Game 2 @ Tal'Darim Altar

Game 2 lasted much longer than game 1. HongUn would be the aggressor for the majority of the game, attacking at different timings and doing a decent amount of damage. HongUn would push into Ryung's base multiple times and was able to control the tempo of the game. This was true for the first half of the game, but the second half was a much different story. Ryung's drops caused HongUn to react all over the map and HongUn's aggressive attacks became easier and easier to defend against. Ryung eventually maxed out and a pivotal battle played out where Ryung was able to EMP over half a dozen High Templars. This reduced HongUn to just three Psi Storms. Ryung then went on to take out HongUn's main and most of his warpgates and HongUn GGs a while later.

Game 3 @ Metalopolis

After his very successful game against Ryung with a fast Stargate, HongUn went back to what worked. Instead of Voidrays, HongUn opted for Phoenixes instead and caused Ryung to produce a lot of Marines to counter. The Phoenixes also meant that Siege Tanks would not be very effective since Graviton Beams could come in play and so Ryung stuck to a bio army instead. With Phoenixes running around wild, Ryung took some heavy damage from the harass losing SCVs and MULEs. The time would eventually come when HongUn engaged Ryung's Marine heavy army with Sentries, Stalkers and Zealots. There was just not chance for Ryung and HongUn would take the match 2-1.
