1.0.21: The Breakdown

Last Friday, Patch 1.0.21 came out with some game altering changes, and new content. To explain the thinking behind the patch S2's Diva gives us the breakdown.

Patch 1.0.21, in addition to bringing a friendly fish from under the sea to Newerth, introduces a significant change to the mechanics of Wards of Sight and Revelation.

Ward Changes:

* Wards (both of Sight and of Revelation) are purchased in packs of 1 instead of 2
* Each ward costs 100, so the cost per ward is the same.

Wards are extremely costly.
Diva explains the general standpoint of those who are buying the wards. Not only does it greatly hinder the starting farm for that hero, but consistently buying them and placing them are dangerous to the hero, and the money spent in wards could be spent in survivability.

Wards do not convey an immediate, obvious benefit to the person who places it.
- "Wards don’t give stats, they don’t make you faster, and they don’t make you hit harder. A ward's true strength is their long-term value, and the added vision they give you on the map. Players will often not want to buy wards because they would rather spend the 200 gold on items to help them stay in lane and farm."

The Free-rider problem.
- "The change to make wards purchasable one at a time makes team play much more effective. Each lane can buy one ward and place it at their respective spots, and it reduces the burden one player would have to deal with by splitting the cost. One ward is better than no wards."

The change is simple and effective, and will have a great change to the game as we know it.
