Horizon Hunters Gathering is a co-op multiplayer game launching on PlayStation 5 and PC

Guerilla Games’ next Horizon game is a multiplayer title with a new artstyle.

Developer Guerrilla Games has officially unveiled its next entry in the Horizon franchise, but it might not be the one players were expecting. Horizon Hunters Gathering is a three-player co-op multiplayer game that has players team up in squads to take down enemy machines in the world of Horizon, with its own distinct artstyle and gameplay mechanics separate from the mainline games.

All-new Horizon multiplayer game announced with new protagonists

Guerrilla head Jan-Bart van Beek began the nearly 10-minute reveal of Horizon Hunters Gathering with a promise that single-player games are “a huge part of who we are as a studio,” seemingly affirming that another Horizon adventure starring Aloy is indeed coming. However, the studio is also keen to try something new, hence its latest multiplayer game.

Horizon Hunters Gathering has players team up in squads of three as Hunters trying to fight back a rising threat: increasingly aggressive and erratic machines are popping up around America, destroying settlements and endangering lives. Aloy tasks Eren with stopping the threat, and he turns to the Hunters for help in an original story considered canonical to the main Horizon stories.

Much like Monster Hunter, these hunts will see players work together to hunt down challenging monsters by targeting specific weaknesses–the twist being that each Hunter is also armed with a set of magic-like skills, and thus divided into different classes. The game is also touted as a live-service title, which means that more Hunters and story content will be added post-launch.

Guerrilla Games has revealed two game modes for Horizon Hunters Gathering. The first is Machine Incursion, a fast-paced mission that has players explore a shrinking map, gather loot, and face a final boss. The second is Cauldron Descent, which has players comb their way through multiple stages of a dungeon with ever-changing rooms.

Guerrilla Games has not announced a release date for Horizon Hunters Gathering, but the developer plans to hold a closed playtest for the game by the end of February. Interested players can sign up via the PlayStation Beta Program. The game will launch on both PC and PlayStation 5.

Another Horizon game is also in the works at NCSoft, entitled Horizon Steel Frontiers.
