The Game Developer Choice Awards (GDCA) announced that they will be honoring Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill (the Co-Creators of League of Legends) with the Pioneer Award for a "Breakthrough tech and gameplay design milestone".
The co-founders of Riot accepted the reward at the 14th Annual Game Developers Choice Award ceremony held on 19th of March at the Moscone Convention Center. The voting itself is done by game designers and industry veterans. In their speech Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill expressed their gratitude towards the hosts, voting members and professionals of the industry who inspired them, but most of all underlined the help of the fans, saying that nothing is possible without the gamers themselves.
Since its release in 2009 League of Legends has become the single most popular online game with around 30 million players logging into the game on a daily basis. League of Legends does not only have tournaments with rewards over 1 million dollars and sold outs within hours live events, but also has established regular seasons much like standard sports. The NA and EU LCS as well as GPL, LPL and OGN in Asia grow up in viewership and rewards with every next season. League of Legends has set new standards to the professional gaming scene and has helped popularizing E-sports as no game before.
