Riot announced on their website today that they will be hosting a new tournament, called The Battle of the Atlantic, pitting North America versus Europe in a competition for bragging rights and about 30,000$ to the winning side.
The format of the tournament is five best of threes, with each team going up against their equally ranked opponent for points awarded based on ladder standing. At the end of the competition the points will be tallied to determine which side of the Atlantic is best.
The Battle of the Atlantic will run parallel with the Challenger League Promotion Series over December 14th-22nd, with some matches played in Cologne, Germany and some in Los Angeles, California.

It seems that Riot plans to make this even annual, and started the tournament in response to fan demand for more international competition between the top teams in the world. The tournament should provide a sneak peek at strategies and synergy before the LCS kicks off once again in Spring 2014.
