Cross-region stats: KDAs and champion picks before Superweek

This image is called Hai-top (also originally from lolesports Flickr).

It may have been a while since we took one of these inventories, but we figured the week before superweek was a good time to touch base with our international stats.  These statistics are all cummulative (excepting GPL, which only takes the quarterfinals of the playoffs into account), and some general facts abound.

AD carries in successful teams tend to hold the highest KDAs across the globe, staying alive to ensure their team a victory.  An AD carry holds the highest KDA in every major league (we don't have OGN Champions Spring stats up to date yet, but we count Masters in its place).  In addition, with Elise nerfs starting to hit tournament servers, Thresh, Lulu, and Lucian rise to become some of the most contested picks internationally.  And finally, some of the niche picks in each region may surprise you.

Team KDA's by region

These stats are through Week 6 and do not include data from IM vs Jin Air.

In Masters, imp holds the top spit with a KDA of 15, but his reign could be short-lived, as he only played two games so far.  With Samsung going against IM next week, we might see a bit of a shakeup.  Faker, despite SK Telecom T1 K's recent losses and somewhat less dominant gameplay, still retains the second-highest KDA in Masters at 12.4.

Samsung Galaxy Blue's Acorn has proven himself in twice the amount of games imp has.  His nigh unkillable Mundo and Renekton has netted him an impressive KDA of 12, but his Shyvana may leave a little to be desired.

These stats are through Week 6.

A bit has changed since last we reviewed LPL.  World Elite no longer holds any top KDA slots.  Instead, OMG and Edward Gaming have emerged as the strongest teams in the Chinese region both at first glance and by the numbers.  OMG's san has stepped into Cool's shoes as the team's new star, and his KDA of 9.4 reflects well of performance.

From EDG, U has recently started showing up NaMei, the AD carry constantly turning heads.  When NaMei enters the rift with a target strapped to his back, U is able to pick up the kills from behind and carry his team when they need it most.  As a result, both of EDG's main damage dealers appear in the top three with KDAs of 8.5 and 7.3 respectively.

These stats only include recent Quarterfinal games.

The start of the GPL Playoffs has represented a time for AHQ to prove they deserve to be at the top.  They may have lost a game to the Saigon Jokers before the end of the regular season, but this new clean slate has primed AHQ's GarnetDevil to shoot to the top of KDA standings again.  His debuting Jinx netted him a KDA of 15.7.

As TPA also faced the last playoff seed of their opposite group, they too had an opportunity to rack up some kills.  The top laner, Achie, takes second place with a KDA of 12, but AHQ's Prydz is not far behind at 11.8.  Should TPA and AHQ face in the finals this Spring, as many anticipate, this top lane matchup will be a highlight.

Data are from Week 10 and do not include Week 11 Superweek data.

European top KDAs have risen a little since last we visited them—at least in the case of Rekkles.  Once again on top of the standings with a KDA of 7.1, Fnatic can attribute their return to prominence to his strong performances on Vayne and Caitlyn.

AD carries dominate the top KDA list in Europe.  Genja, now only at second place, retains a KDA of 6.3, and Alliance's Tabzz makes waves for his team, pulling his KDA from near the bottom at the start of the split to third place heading into the final week at 5.1.

Data extends through Week 10.

AD carries continue to make a splash on these lists as we head over to North America.  Surprisingly, Cloud 9's Sneaky leads the pack, edging out his team's star jungler with a KDA of 8.6 while Meteos nips at his heels with 8.5.

To round out the list, TSM's WildTurtle comes in third.  Even with TSM's recent loss to CLG, WildTurtle's performance on Twitch remained a highlight, and his KDA of 7.8 is strong evidence that TSM isn't just the Bjergsen show.

Contested Champions by Region

It might take a while for Elise and Kassadin changes to tear them from the top rung in all regions, but we can see LuluThresh, and Shyvana close behind them, gunning for most contested.  Even with the changes, Elise might not be banned as often, but she still finds herself in capable hands.

At the bottom of the list, we see Draven's four bans, and as Draven has been played in Champions, it's easy to guess why the bans exist.  Nami is also selectively more popular in Masters than in our other regions though she has not received any bans.

Kassadin was never as popular in LPL as he was in Korea, Europe, or North America, but Elise's ban rate is par for the course.  As 4.4 Elise nerfs have yet to hit competitive Chinese play, we'll have to wait to see their effects.  Behind her, Lucian is unquestionably the most popular AD carry in LPL, and Thresh complements him in the classic wifesteal lane.

The real stories are the high popularity of Kha'Zix jungle, Syndra mid, and the rise of Morgana support.  Though Kha'Zix is a top tier champion in many regions, he appears in nearly every LPL match, and Syndra's pick rate of around 40% puts her on par with Gragas, though she isn't banned as often.  Since World Elite lost to Morgana support compositions at IEM, LPL has played her a total of fifteen times and even banned her once.  Who's to say the Chinese can't adapt?

We've wiped the slate clean for playoffs, but Thresh continues to be the most contested champion in GPL.  Jay, Greentea, and Junie have all made it to the bracket stage and favor the champion heavily.  That said, the popularity of Ziggs, Lulu, and Kha'Zix aren't far behind, and we expect to see more of them in the semifinals.

Jinx also came out after a long period of absence during GPL Quarterfinals with GarnetDevil playing her expertly.  Fizz rounds out GPL's niche picks, as westdoor still favors him in a pinch.

As in other regions, Kassadin and Elise aren't about to lose their thrones any time soon.  That said, Annie, Thresh, Lucian, and Renekton lead the charge.  Caitlyn has been picking up steam, and though these numbers aren't included, she received quite a few bans during the last Superweek of EU LCS Spring.

Near the bottom of the top 30, Yasuo gained a few more ban(d) wagoners after IEM, and Aatrox managed to scoot his way onto the list before he got himself barred from competitive play.

North America continues to be the region where Leblanc gains the most traction at 27 picks and an astounding 53 bans, making her NA's most banned champion after Kassadin at 75 bans.  Elise still leads the region in popularity, but the usual host of characters—Thresh, Annie, Renekton, Shyvana, and Gragas—follow her closely.

North America's more niche picks float at the bottom with Jax seeing more play in NA than any other region besides when TPA's Achie trots him out on occasion in GPL.  NA also seems to be the leading region in the bring-back-Zed movement, as he has received 14 picks and 11 bans in NA LCS.
