Stats corner: What do Koreans play?

I guess that settles it then: nobody will ever beat Ezreal in terms of popularity until something is drastically changed. Arguably the best AD carry is once again at the top of the charts, meaning we’re running out of things to say about him so we won’t even try.

What we will point out, however, is the return of Sona to the top three. The Maven of Strings briefly fell out of favor during IEM and DreamHack surpassed in popularity by Zyra and Lulu, crawled to the top 10 during IPL 5 and is now finally back where she belongs, among the support kings.

Also significant is the increase in Irelia’s popularity. In previous tournaments, Irelia used to be that top laner that often made it to the top fifteen (mostly due to the high ban rates of other champions in her clique) but she usually hovered around the middle, outshined by the Olafs, Shens, Jayces or Malphites of the world. Good job, Irelia, and thanks for helping against the stagnation of top lane stats.

Before this part of the article is wrapped up, let’s congratulate Caitlyn, who defeated Corki and Vayne for the prestigious “Second best AD carry” prize, so there’s another pleasant to see shift in the rankings. Even more appealing is the more or less equal distribution of “First picked” rates as this time there’s no Diana having an embarrassing lead of 100% percent or more.

Oh, and it's Karthus and Orianna for most picked AP carries but you don't need to look at charts to know that, do you?



If the “Most picked” charts do see a hint of diversity as compared to previous tournaments, the “Most banned” and “Most contested” do not. In fact, the top four of the former is absolutely the same as the one from IPL 5, even the numbers are strikingly similar.

Given that most of the matches were played on Season 2 patch, one should expect, of course, such mimicry of results. The Season 3 patch came late into the group stage and there were picks like Pantheon, Zed and Riven that, in larger scale, could have altered the stats so hope is not forlorn and 2013 should be able to give us different graphs that we can comment on.
