Bad news for the U.S.

[s]event_wcg[/s]
The U.S. World Cyber Games have become quite a mess in the past few days. Two World Cyber Games qualifiers have officially been cancelled: Texas and Atlanta, Georgia. Also, the San Francisco, California qualifier has been taken off the sign-up page, but there is no official comment on it yet. Here are Joe Moss' official statements:

Unfortunately, we have to pull the Atlanta qualifier from our list of qualifiers, as we have not been able to reach an agreement with an adequate host. I hope that players in the southeast will be able to join us during one of our other qualifiers in the area, like Miami or DC/Virginia, or through our online tournament. We apologize for any inconvenience to those of you who were hoping to participate in an Atlanta event, and will continue to work to bring WCG events closer to all of you in the future.

At this time, we have to remove Texas from our list of qualifier locations, as we have not come to terms with an adequate host. If we are able to add a Texas qualifier back in, we will let you know as soon as possible. In the meantime, I hope you are able to make plans to attend another WCG qualifying location or to compete online. I know that Texas is a great gaming community, and that the other WCG qualifiers are not particularly close by. We do apologize that that there is no closer qualifier to you Texans, and will continue to work to bring events closer to you in the future.

WCG USA

This is very bad news for those who live in the United States because it severely limits the amount of locations for gamers to travel to. Last year, there was a whopping 20 locations all around the United States. This year, there are only 12 locations, with possibly 3 being cancelled.

To me, this situation doesn't make any sense. For once, another country besides our beloved Korea has the privilege to host the World Cyber Games Grand Finals, the United States holding this honor. I really would think that the same amount of effort (if not more) would have gone into this year's U.S. WCG qualifiers as last years', but unfortunately this is not the case.

Edit: I almost forgot that there are WCG USA Online qualifiers!
Two online ladder tournaments over the course of two months each, running from June through September. Players will issue challenges, play matches, and move up and down the ladder rankings. At the specified cut-off date, the ladders will close and the top two players will advance to the WCG 2004 USA Final!

Even though your odds of progressing to the WCG USA Finals have slimmed dramatically, there's still hope!
