Red Dead Redemption 2 has racked up 85 million sales over the past eight years.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is now the third best-selling video game ever released, Rockstar Games announced during Take-Two Interactive’s Q4 2026 quarterly earnings presentation.
The open-world, Wild West-themed title was released in 2018, followed by its PC launch the following year. Despite being nearly a decade old, the game has continued to steadily accumulate sales, with a whopping three million copies sold in the last three months between March and May.
Those additional three million sales brought the game’s total to 85 million copies sold, effectively pushing Red Dead Redemption 2 further up the list of the best-selling games of all time.
It has narrowly overtaken Wii Sports, although the gap to the top two titles remains far larger, with Grand Theft Auto V reaching 225 million sales and Minecraft standing at a staggering 350 million copies sold.
What games are on the best-selling games of all time list?
While Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V appear untouchable for now, several other titles on the list remain close to the third-place position.
Other games in the top rankings include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, PUBG: Battlegrounds, Terraria, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Super Mario Bros., and Human: Fall Flat. Among them, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the newest release, while Super Mario Bros. is the oldest, dating back to 1985.
The rankings are also expected to shift later this November, as Rockstar Games’ next major project, Grand Theft Auto VI, is projected to sell enormous numbers upon release. Analysts have projected that Grand Theft Auto VI, which used up about US$1 billion in production costs, could sell as many as 25 million copies on its first day alone and, if accurate, it would rapidly climb the best-selling games rankings.
For now, Rockstar Games appears fully focused on the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, to the point that some fans feel the studio has neglected long-standing requests from the Red Dead Redemption 2 community, such as a 60fps upgrade.
Following what is expected to be a hugely successful launch in November, attention may finally shift back towards the Red Dead franchise–and perhaps even the long-awaited sequel to Red Dead Redemption 2.
