Bungie officially ends support for Destiny 2, final content update launches in June

Destiny 2 will release its final content update a lot sooner than expected.

Bungie had some sad news to share for Destiny fans today (22 May): the developer is officially ending support for its free-to-play shooter Destiny 2 on 9 June, 2026. This means that players are getting Destiny 2’s final content update in the mere span of three weeks, after which no future expansions or DLC for the game will be released.

This the end of the road for Destiny 2, as its maker now looks to begin “incubating our next games.”

Why is Bungie ending support for Destiny 2?

Bungie, the developer behind Halo, Destiny, and most recently, Marathon, is officially moving on from Destiny 2. What was once the studio’s arguably definitive modern title is now headed for the history books, as Bungie confirmed today that it would be ending live-service updates for the game starting from June 2026.

This week, the developer published a statement on social media to confirm the news. The statement read:

“For almost twelve years, we have had the joy and honor to explore the Destiny universe with you all. Through all the ups and downs, surprises and triumphs, building Destiny alongside our players has been a monumental privilege. While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2.

“As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio.”

The studio also noted that while it will cease active development on Destiny 2, the game will continue to be playable much like the original Destiny. The game’s final content update, scheduled for release on 9 June, is meant to futureproof its gameplay loop, so players can return to it more easily in the coming years.

While the developer did not outright confirm any future games it has in development, or even confirm the existence of a third mainline Destiny game, it did note that it had “reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2.” Now, the company is looking to begin incubating its next games, which suggests that Destiny 2’s shutdown is directly related to its intention of creating something new.

What is in Destiny 2’s final update?

Destiny 2’s final update is entitled Moment of Triumph. Interestingly, it includes what Bungie calls “small character beats to leave the story and characters in interesting places, touching on themes across Destiny” and a few lore additions to cap off the game’s story.

The Director is returning as the new centre of activities in Destiny 2, and a new permanent Pantheon is coming with a fresh slate of bosses for players to challenge. New abilities and ability updates will also be included, while seasonal updates are being retired.

Destiny 2: Moment of Triumph launches on 9 June, 2026, as the game’s final content update. You can read up on all of its upcoming content here.
