The lasagna-loving cat has officially declared war on Mondays in the MTG universe.
The next Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drop is taking one of the internet’s most recognisable cats into the multiverse. Announced as part of the upcoming Cats are the Best Superdrop, the new collaboration turns classic Magic cards into full-blown Garfield memes, comic strips, motivational posters, and surreal fever dreams. It is exactly the kind of thing that will either make your playgroup laugh uncontrollably or question every decision that led them to your table.
The collaboration was teased by Wizards of the Coast on Saturday (16 May), through their official X (formerly Twitter account):
What is the Magic: The Gathering Garfield Secret Lair Superdrop?
The new Garfield-themed Secret Lair was revealed as part of Magic’s ongoing line of collectible mini-sets, which typically feature existing cards reprinted with entirely new artwork and themes. Over the past few years, Secret Lair has become increasingly experimental, leaning harder into internet humour, pop culture crossovers, and intentionally bizarre concepts. This latest set continues that trend in spectacular fashion.

The Garfield crossover is split into three separate “drops”, each containing five cards. The first imagines what would happen if classic cards originally created by Richard Garfield were mashed together with the other Garfield, the comic strip cat himself. That means iconic spells like Swords to Plowshares and Counterspell now feature comic panels of Garfield bullying Odie or tormenting Jon Arbuckle instead of traditional fantasy art. It is absurd, arguably deeply cursed, and somehow still instantly recognisable as Magic: The Gathering fare.
When does the Garfield Secret Lair release?
The Garfield Secret Lair arrives as part of the Cats are the Best Superdrop, which goes live on 15 June at 9.00 AM PST/16 June 12.00 AM GMT+8 through the official Secret Lair store.
As with most Secret Lair launches, the drops are expected to be limited-run releases aimed heavily at collectors and Commander players who enjoy showing up with the weirdest deck at the table. Given how fast some previous crossover sets have disappeared, there is a decent chance these Garfield cards will vanish quickly once sales open.
Players can already sign up for alerts on the official Secret Lair website.
