The star of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is getting a new game this year.
Fox McCloud is officially making a comeback this year, following his unexpected role in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. A Star Fox Direct held this week confirmed that the original Nintendo 64 game, Star Fox 64, is getting a full-fledged remake, entitled Star Fox. The game sports overhauled character designs for the Star Fox team and modernised gameplay.

What is Star Fox?
After years of hibernation, Fox McCloud is officially making a comeback with a fresh new video game later this year. Entitled Star Fox, the game is heavily inspired by the 1997 game Star Fox 64. This will be the second official remake of Star Fox 64, following Star Fox 64 3D (2011).
Players will pilot an Arwing over various planets from the original game, including Corneria, with returning Star Fox teammates Slippy, Falco, and more. The entire team has received new and more realistic character designs for the remake, along with the planets and environments.
While Star Fox 64's gameplay appears to have been touched on for this remake, the classic elements of Star Fox are still here: on-rails shooting, side objectives, and barrel rolls aplenty. Players can also use the Switch 2 Joy-Con to use mouse controls, or share a Joy-Con with a friend so they can control the Arwing and its guns separately.
Does Star Fox have multiplayer?
Star Fox also has a 4v4 multiplayer mode called Battle mode, which allows players to play the roles of Team Star Wolf or Team Star Fox, as the two teams go head-to-head. Different planets will have different objectives for teams to complete, such as Corneria, which has players fight for zone control.
Interestingly, Star Fox also includes an AR feature that lets players wear filters of the Star Fox team in GameChat. That means you’ll be able to quite literally play the entire game as Fox McCloud, if you so wish.
Star Fox is launching on the Nintendo Switch 2 on 25 June, 2026.
