Star Fox making his cinematic debut? It’s more likely than you think.
This week, Nintendo and Illumination Pictures dropped a new poster for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie confirming a rather shocking franchise crossover. The new poster confirms that the upcoming animated movie will star Fox McCloud, the iconic protagonist of the action-adventure space flight game series Star Fox.

Is Star Fox in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?
The upcoming Super Mario animated sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is clearly set to surprise viewers with more than a few Nintendo Easter eggs, including appearances from characters outside the Mario franchise itself. A new poster revealed this week has confirmed that Fox McCloud, who first appeared in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System’s Star Fox (1993), is a part of the movie’s main cast.
Fox McCloud will be familiar to fans of the iconic, though now-stagnant Star Fox franchise, but modern-day fans might better recognise him as a playable fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series. The series also stars Mario himself, which makes this ostensibly a Super Smash Bros-themed crossover.
Will The Super Mario Galaxy Movie have a crossover with Super Smash Bros.?
Fox has appeared in every game in the Super Smash Bros. fighting game franchise, making his appearance in this movie rather suspect. Given the movie’s galaxy-spanning storyline, fans are now speculating that we might see more spacefaring characters from other Nintendo franchises make an appearance as well.
Topping the list of fan-requested cameos is Samus Aran of Metroid fame, though Nintendo has come nowhere near announcing her appearance in the movie. Time will tell if the movie will feature more Nintendo characters other than Fox McCloud, though it already seems packed with references to various Super Mario games as is.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theatres on 1 April, 2026.
