Marathon's mid-season update rewards helping strangers, nerfs Claymore Drones and Thermal Scopes

Maybe it's time to get a bit friendly toward other players in Tau Ceti.

Bungie has rolled out a substantial mid-season update for Marathon, bringing sweeping balance changes, new loot, and a fresh system designed to reward player cooperation during matches.

Announced via an official blog post and overview video on 14 April 2026, the update targets several dominant strategies while introducing new progression incentives across the game. Bungie also released an update video on YouTube as well:

What is the C.A.R.R.I system in Marathon?

The headline addition is the new C.A.R.R.I protocol, which rewards players for assisting others during a match, whether they’re in a squad or playing solo.

According to the update, players can earn commendations by helping others complete contracts or by extracting together. These commendations can then be spent on salvage packs or faction reputation boosts.

The system also allows players to team up with those they successfully extract with in future runs, effectively creating a built-in way to form new squads. Bungie describes it as a system that encourages cooperation, with players earning rewards for being “kind to strangers”.

How has Bungie nerfed claymore drones in Marathon?

One of the more unconventional tactics has been directly addressed. Players had been stacking multiple claymores onto pickpocket drones to create fast-moving explosive traps.

This strategy has now been restricted. As stated in the patch notes, “only one claymore can be placed on a drone at a time”, limiting the effectiveness of these improvised weapons while still allowing them to deal damage at close range.

What changes were made to thermal scopes in Marathon?

Thermal sights, widely considered one of the strongest attachments since launch, have received multiple nerfs in this update. Players will no longer be able to loot thermal scopes at deluxe (blue) rarity. In addition, their effectiveness has been reduced across several areas:

  • Thermal detection range reduced by 20 metres
  • Aim-down-sight assist lowered
  • Standard ADS penalties remain in effect

These changes directly target the dominance of thermal optics in engagements across maps.

New weapons and loot have been added to Marathon

The update introduces 11 new unique deluxe (blue) weapon drops, now available in the Perimeter and Dire Marsh zones.

These weapons are described as less powerful counterparts to the unique drops found in Cryo Archive, offering mid-game players more viable options before tackling higher-difficulty areas.

For solo players, new items have also been added:

  • Depleted self-revive kits, which are automatically sold upon extraction
  • Mercy kits, allowing players to revive downed runners

Has the Recon shell been buffed?

Yes, the Recon shell has received significant upgrades. Both its Echo Pulse and Tracker Drone abilities have been reworked. The pulse now tracks enemies more effectively, while the drone has improved pursuit and damage capabilities when deployed.

Marathon’s new cosmetics for Season 1’s battle pass

Bungie has also expanded the cosmetic offerings in both the free and paid versions of the Season 1 battle pass. Players progressing through the pass can unlock new cosmetics for shells, weapons, and other elements. This update follows earlier feedback that the initial battle pass felt underwhelming. Additionally, new Arachne-themed shell cosmetics are now earnable via the Codex, providing rewards for players focused on combat encounters.

This mid-season update introduces a mix of systemic changes and balance adjustments, alongside new rewards and progression options across Marathon’s ongoing Season 1.
