Not the kind of drop GTA VI fans were hoping for.
Rockstar Games has confirmed a data breach after hacker group named ShinyHunters claimed to have access to internal data and issued a ransom demand. The group threatened to leak files if payment was not made by 14 April, 2026.
The situation has drawn immediate attention given the studio’s ongoing work on Grand Theft Auto VI, though Rockstar has clarified the scope of the incident.
What has been confirmed in Rockstar Games data breach?
In a statement sent to Kotaku, Rockstar Games addressed the situation following the claims: “We can confirm that a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach. This incident has no impact on our organisation or our players.”

The group behind the threat, ShinyHunters, posted on 11 April alleging that Rockstar’s cloud data had been accessed and warning: “Pay or leak… Make the right decision, don’t be the next headline.” The deadline for the alleged leak has been set for 14 April.
Rockstar’s response frames the breach as limited to internal data, with no disruption to operations or player services.
How did the Rockstar Games breach happen?
Reports from Cybersec Guru and Hackread indicate that the breach is linked to third-party services rather than Rockstar’s internal systems being directly compromised.
The attackers are believed to have accessed data through Anodot, a cloud monitoring and analytics platform used alongside Snowflake. Anodot has recently been associated with its own security issues, which may have created an entry point into connected cloud environments. There is no indication that Snowflake itself was breached.
What data was accessed in the most recent Rockstar hack?
The exact data obtained has not been disclosed by ShinyHunters. However, early reports suggest that the breach involves corporate information, rather than player data.
This may include internal materials such as contracts, financial records, and marketing plans. Rockstar’s statement emphasises that the incident has “no impact” on players, with no evidence pointing to compromised accounts or personal data.
Is GTA VI affected by the Rockstar data breach?
There is currently no confirmation that Grand Theft Auto VI assets, builds, or gameplay data are involved in the breach.
The incident has nonetheless drawn comparisons to the 2022 leak, where early GTA VI footage surfaced online after unauthorised access to Rockstar’s internal systems. In this case, Rockstar’s wording points to a more contained breach involving non-material company data, rather than development content.
Who is ShinyHunters and what is its track record?
ShinyHunters is a hacking group active since 2020, known for targeting large organisations and attempting to ransom or sell stolen data. Previous targets include Microsoft, Ticketmaster, Cisco, AT&T, and Wattpad. The group has a history of following through on leaks, which places focus on the 14 April deadline referenced in its warning.
