A purrfect launch with 1 million and counting.
Just one week after launch, indie game Mewgenics has clawed its way into headlines after having sold over one million copies, surprising its creators. From the minds of Edmund McMillen (The Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy) and Tyler Glaiel (Closure, The End Is Nigh), this cat-breeding roguelite has drawn attention for its mix of tactical combat, breeding mechanics, and offbeat humour.
Tyler Glaiel shared the milestone on X on Wednesday (February 18 SGT), posting Whom’s artwork to mark the achievement:
This was followed up another post on X sharing some statistics regarding Mewgenics.
“For those saying its success was expected based on pedigree, week 1 sales for games are usually a fraction of wishlists,” he said, sharing that hey and McMillen “got a bit blindsided,” also adding in a follow-up to the thread that he was “very glad you all enjoy it.”
Mewgenics on the way to consoles after a strong and steady first week
On top of this, McMillen also confirmed plans for console ports and downloadable content in reply to a fan inquiry.
“Working on it now not sure when it will be done though but at this point it might be in [development] for all systems [consoles],” he said.
According to SteamDB, Steam concurrent player counts peaking above 115,000 and a 24-hour peak of 97,151. At the time of writing, over 57,000 players were online, scratching through adventures.
Glaiel confirmed localisation in Simplified Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Russian, suggesting the player base is likely to grow further.
For those new to the game, Mewgenics is a Roguelike that lets players breed, train, and equip squads of mutant cats to tackle turn-based adventures in Boon County. Each cat can take on different class rolesfrom Fighter and Tank to Mage and beyond, with over 1,000 unique abilities and hundreds of items to experiment with. Cats carry scars, experience, and sometimes even extra heads back to the home base, passing on mutations to future generations and rewarding careful planning. More information about the game is available here.
With localisation and console versions on the way, Mewgenics’ community is expected to grow further.
