This week, it’s all about indie games and anime.
Pat yourself on the back, we’re almost halfway through May! This week, PC players will finally get their hands on Ghost of Tsushima (with one notable caveat, which we’ll get to later) while the new Ryan Reynolds joint IF hits theatres. Quite a few fun indie games are also set to release over the next few days, and one of them is a very cute Dungeons & Dragons-inspired RPG.
Here’s what we’re playing and watching this week.
What are we playing?
First up is the PC release of Sucker Punch Productions’ action-adventure game Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, which includes its 2021 Iki Island expansion. Here’s what you need to know: while most people will be able to get their hands on the game when it launches on May 16, gamers in specific regions won’t be able to play it unless they sign up for a PlayStation Network account from a different country. This has to do with Sony’s new mandate that PlayStation Network accounts become necessary to play its multiplayer games, despite the Network being unavailable in many regions across the globe.
Lessons were learned from the recent Helldivers 2 debacle it seems, just not quite the right ones. If all of that sounds like too much of a headache, there are a few indie games we have our eye on this week too. First up is Baladins, a game that has you play as a team of highly-skilled entertainers touring a fantasy kingdom to spread joy and fun. The Dungeons & Dragons-inspired game allows up to four players to create their own characters and make their own choices to create wildly different story campaigns. This game launches on May 15.
Alternatively, publisher Annapurna Interactive’s brilliantly-titled new game Lorelei and the Laser Eyes follows a woman who participates in a project in a strange old hotel. After being summoned there by an eccentric man, she becomes embroiled in a game of increasingly dangerous illusions. The player will have to solve a series of puzzles and riddles in this strange environment, all to decipher the mystery of Lorelei and the Laser Eyes.
What are we watching?
John Krasinski's (The Office, The Quiet Place) new comedy IF hits theatres this week, following a young girl who suddenly gains the ability to see other people’s abandoned imaginary friends (IFs). When she finds out that her neighbour (Ryan Reynolds) has the same ability, they decide to reunite all the IFs with their former kids.
Fans of the volleyball anime Haikyu!! can finally watch the first instalment of its two-part finale in theaters outside Japan this week, titled Haikyu!! The Movie: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump. The movie will see Hinata, Kageyama and the rest of Karasuno High’s volleyball team finally face off against Nekoma High in the third round of nationals.
For romance fans, Bridgerton Season 3 Part 1 drops on Netflix on May 16. This season follows Colin, the third Bridgerton son, as he returns from his travels to reunite with his once-close friend Penelope, whom we now know to be Lady Whistledown. There’s a lot of room for drama there, to be sure.
