Videogamedunkey's first published title, a charming cat game, Homeworld 3 and more in gaming this week.
As Helldivers 2 prepares to bounce back from an absolutely horrendous weekend of bad press, this week gives us more games, movies and TV shows to dig into. That includes another title to add to our ever-expanding collection of cat games, a long-awaited RTS, a new Planet of the Apes movie and the return of Doctor Who. Fans of sci-fi are going to eat really well this week.
What are we playing?
Homeworld 3 (May 13) arrives 21 long years after Homeworld 2, delivering more of the classic sci-fi RTS gameplay fans love from this series. The sequel will have players assume control of various ships to battle their way through the galaxy in tactical and immersive space combat.
YouTuber Videogamedunkey’s game publishing arm Bigmode is also set to release its first game on May 9: a Metroidvania called Animal Well, which throws players into a fever dream filled with nightmarish animals. If you still want to play an animal game without crying yourself to sleep afterwards, you can also check out Little Kitty, Big City on May 9. This plays like a cosier version of Stray, putting players in the paws of a cat wandering around a large city with no particular plan to get home.
What are we watching?
Let’s say you’re much too busy with Helldivers 2 and Stellar Blade to pick up another game, but new movies and TV shows are fair game. There’s plenty of that this week too, starting with Dark Matter on May 8. This Apple TV+ series stars Joel Edgerton as a physicist who gets transported into an alternate version of his life. He then has to race against time to return to his own reality before an alternate version of himself harms his wife (Jennifer Connelly) and family.
The big Doctor Who reboot also arrives on May 11, with the two-episode premiere of Series 14 on Disney+. Ncuti Gatwa is the titular Doctor this time around, in an eight episode-long season that will see him step on a landmine, meet the Beatles, reference Bridgerton and more - not necessarily in that order. This should be a good entry point for the series too, as most of Disney+’s marketing seems to label it ‘Season 1’.
Lastly, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes premieres this week, set 300 years after Caesar met his end in War for the Planet of the Apes. Now, apes are in control of the planet while humans have regressed into a more feral state. The ape king Proximus Caesar is enslaving other clans of apes, while a chimpanzee hunter named Noa embarks on a journey with a human named Mae that will decide the fates of apes and humans alike.
