What are we playing this week? (18/3/2024)

Between Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Princess Peach: Showtime!, we’re spoiled for choice on what to play this week.

We have a terribly big week in gaming this week, with multiple big hitters ranging from Capcom’s new RPG Dragon’s Dogma 2 to Nintendo’s Princess Peach: Showtime! launching over the next few days. It’s an absolutely packed week of game launches, and there’s more to look forward to in the land of TV too, with the premiere of X-Men ‘97 also happening in the next few days. If you’re bored and looking for something new to pick up, your options are plentiful.

What we’re playing

The 1992 classic horror game Alone in the Dark is getting a remake starring Jodie Comer and David Harbour, now with third-person shooter gameplay reminiscent of Resident Evil 2 Remake. The game launches on March 20 and could scratch your haunted house itch - if you’re the kind of person who has a haunted house itch to begin with. For more simplistic pleasures, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile is finally launching worldwide on March 21 after a lengthy delay.

This week’s big-ticket item is Dragon’s Dogma 2 (March 22), a fantasy RPG that gives the series an unofficial reboot on a much larger scale. This game lets players take on different vocations and embark on a world-spanning adventure that likely ends in some good ol’ fashioned dragon slaying. Like Baldur’s Gate 3, there’s a sandbox element here that lets you mess around in the world and come up with different solutions to the problems you face. Princess Peach: Showtime! (March 22) is a decidedly more casual experience, finally giving Mushroom Kingdom’s princess her very own game. Here, Peach will take on a stage play and transform into different roles to defeat Grape and the Sour Bunch.

If you enjoyed Nioh and Ghost of Tsushima, you should also check out Rise of the Ronin when it launches on March 22. This open-world action game is set in 1863 Japan, where the Black Ships of the West have descended upon the nation’s borders and thrown everything into turmoil.

What we’re watching

Over on the silver screen, there are two big shows coming out this week I’m keeping an eye on. First up is X-Men ‘97 (March 20), which as the name suggests, is a sequel to the classic 1997 cartoon X-Men: The Animated Series. Most of the original cast is back for this Disney+ continuation, with the story picking up right after the climactic death of Professor Xavier. If you grew up watching this on Saturday mornings, you’re going to have to get used to watching it in the middle of the week now - but that’s what adulthood is all about.

If you’re a little too grown-up for nostalgic cartoon revivals, how about a bottle of wine and some hard sci-fi instead? Netflix’s adaptation of the acclaimed 3 Body Problem book series premieres on March 21, following an astrophysicist who gets sent to a secret radar base and makes a decision that echoes across space and time to a group of present-day scientists. These scientists then band together to face humanity’s greatest threat. This series was created by Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Make of that what you will.
