Smoke, Rain, Cyrax, Sektor and Frost have been confirmed for Mortal Kombat 1 in a gory new trailer.
NetherRealm Studios has released a new ‘Lin Kuei’ trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, confirming a whole lot of ninjas now set to appear in the upcoming reboot. Smoke and Rain will be in the fighting roster at launch, while Sektor, Cyrax and Frost will be available as Kameo Fighters. All of these characters sport new outfits and histories, thanks to the upcoming game’s rebooted timeline.

It’s a pretty exciting day to be an OG Mortal Kombat fan, since Smoke in particular has been a part of the franchise for years but made no appearance in its last entry. The ninja returns in Mortal Kombat 1 as an ally to Scorpion and Sub-Zero, both of whom are now brothers who seem to have differing opinions on how best to protect Earthrealm. Smoke is also voiced by Yuri Lowenthal, an actor Spider-Man fans should be very familiar with.
Though the trailer keeps these ninjas’ objectives vague, it does reveal that they’ll come into conflict with Rain - another classic Mortal Kombat fighter who has been reimagined as an elemental wizard with a staff. We also see a few Kameo Fighters pop up to help the player here: Cyrax, Sektor and Frost. None of these three have been confirmed to be part of the playable roster, but they could be in the future. Scorpion also appears as a Kameo, proving that a few of these fighters will double up.
Mortal Kombat 1 takes place in a new timeline forged by Fire God Liu Kang, wherein his old mentor Raiden has become mortal, and the rest of his friends and enemies lead very different lives than before. The fighting game launches on September 19, 2023.
