Developer update confirms free characters, kill feed, and more

In the latest Developer Update from PlayOverwatch, Jeff Kaplan confirms free characters, a kill feed in the works, and much more.

After the torrent of feedback they've likely been receiving, Jeff Kaplan has continued the Developer Update series, this time focusing on popular topics around the community. The biggest piece of news here is clearly that they intend for all future character and maps to be patched directly into the game.

This is awesome news for the player base. Having characters and maps be free updates not only keeps everyone on an equal playing field, but it also keeps the community from being split behind a pay wall. Though is great news, it does open the question of how Blizzard will profit from the game in the long term. What's most likely, is they continue on with cosmetic purchasables (like what we're seen from the origins edition).

Among the smaller things covered in the video are kill feeds and post-match cards. Kill feeds are something Jeff Kaplan says they 'have nothing against, just aren't yet implemented'. This is great news for anyone frustrated by not having such information readily available to them in game.

Lastly he brings up concerns about the card and 'on-fire' systems. Both of these, he says, are in a fairly basic form right now and they intend to expand and improve them further. Being on fire isn't conveying the information they want it to right now (that the person is a priority target). Also how you get on fire is far easier on attack, due to defense not being able to gain objective score. This, he says, will be fixed by allowing contesting of points add to objective score.
