New tournaments for marginalized genders to be introduced in 2023 for League and VALORANT

This is on top of the Game Changers which have received good feedback from the community.

Riot Games will be introducing new tournaments for the marginalized genders in 2023. At first, VALORANT will see more tournaments for the segment of the community, and League will follow suit as they need a bit of time to replicate an ecosystem for marginalized genders.

With the growth potential of the marginalized gender tournament circuit – as evident with the popularity of the recent Game Changers – Riot is looking to bank in with an expansion of the Game Changers ecosystem for 2023. The crowning of G2 Gozen as the first world champion for VCT Game Changers will sure to inspire more teams to try and qualify for the tournament circuit.

Product lead for Game Changers EMEA Ashley Washington shared insights on the expansion plans, which are aimed to create more opportunities for more amateur VALORANT players to join in.

She told Dot Esports: “Right now, we (want to) strike the balance between creating a space that’s also sustainable for orgs while remembering that we want to give as many women exposure and opportunity as possible.” She also mentioned that something to help target those needs “in a better way” will also be added to the Game Changers ecosystem next year.

A new format for Game Changers EMEA was announced recently, although there is no news if the structure will be replicated across the other regions.

Riot is also toying with the idea of replicating the Game Changers format for League of Legends but has yet to achieve success like Game Changers. This might soon change as Riot is planning to include a circuit for marginalized genders as part of the future of League.

Naz Aletaha commented to Dot Esports: “We aspire to build out a program for LoL esports for women and other marginalized genders. What you will see over this next year are programs that happen across some of our regional leagues.”

The establishment of the new circuit internationally will not happen overnight – the earliest establishment of a global circuit may only be introduced in 2024 – but this is the right step for the game to be more inclusive to all walks of life in the long run.
