Like father, like daughter.
Fans of Umamusume: Pretty Derby are convinced that chaos runs in the family after Jajamine, the daughter of legendary racehorse Gold Ship, went viral for a debut performance that felt painfully familiar.
The white-coated filly made her first appearance at Kyoto Racecourse on 9 May, competing in a three-year-old maiden race over 2000 metres on turf. While expectations were high thanks to her pedigree, the race quickly became a talking point for completely different reasons.
Instead of charging towards victory, Jajamine finished 14th out of 15 runners after struggling to settle throughout the race. Clips from before the event also showed her tossing her head around and behaving restlessly, immediately reminding racing fans of Gold Ship’s famously unpredictable personality. Rather than mocking the result, though, both horse racing fans and the Umamusume community absolutely loved it.
Jajamine’s debut instantly reminded fans of Gold Ship
For anyone familiar with Gold Ship, the comparisons were immediate. Gold Ship is one of Japan’s most successful and popular modern racehorses, boasting six Grade 1 race wins including the Satsuki Sho and Kikuka Sho in 2012 as well as back-to-back Takarazuka Kinen wins in 2013 and 2014. However, Gold Ship also became legendary for his chaotic temperament and tendency to do the exact opposite of what people expected.
The most well-known incident of Gold Ship's chaotic behaviour was the 2015 Takarazuka Kinen, where he was the overwhelming favourite to win the race for the third straight year but only finished 15th out of 16th runners after he reared up shortly before the starting gates opened. That race would become known as the “12 billion yen incident” for the amount of lost betting tickets due to Gold Ship's shenanigans reportedly amounting to over 12 billion yen (US$135 million).
So when Jajamine started acting restless before her debut and eventually ran out of steam late in the race, fans quickly joked that she had inherited every bit of her father’s energy.
Social media posts spread rapidly after the race, with many Umamusume players calling it the most “lore-accurate” Gold Ship family moment imaginable.
What happened during Gold Ship’s daughter’s debut race?
According to Japanese outlet Sports Bull, jockey Seina Imamura had to restrain Jajamine early on as the filly became overly eager during the race. She travelled in the middle of the pack for most of the event but faded heavily in the final stretch, eventually finishing near the back of the field.
After the race, Imamura remained positive despite the difficult debut. “Everything was new to her, so I think she was a bit confused,” Imamura explained. “But she’s a strong-willed horse, so she recovered well and ran nicely. I hope we can continue to work hard together in the future.” Jajamine is trained by Ryo Terashima and inherited her distinctive white coat from her dam, Satono Jasmine.
Interestingly, her full sister Gorgeous also drew attention during her own racing career, winning her maiden race before later appearing in the 2024 Fantasy Stakes.
Why Gold Ship remains one of Umamusume’s most beloved icons
Part of the reason the story exploded online is because Umamusume Pretty Derby has introduced an entirely new generation of fans to the real-life horses behind their favourite characters.
And few horses are more iconic within the franchise than Gold Ship. In Umamusume, Gold Ship is portrayed as chaotic, eccentric and wildly unpredictable, traits directly inspired by his real racing career. Over the years, she has become one of the franchise’s most recognisable characters precisely because nobody ever knows what she is going to do next.
That is why Jajamine’s debut resonated so strongly with fans. Even in defeat, the race somehow felt like the perfect continuation of the Gold Ship legacy.
