Workshop creators take over $57 million since 2011

The Steam Workshop has proven its susccess in the past three years, with over US$57 million generated for content creators. Valve have decided to expand this crowdsourcing network to include non-Valve titles to encourage greater user contribution.

In the latest blogpost from the Steam Workshop, Valve have noted that their user-generated, profit-sharing platform has generated over US$57 million of revenue for content creators in the past three years. In a move to expand their coverage of user-generated content in video games, they have also announced an expansion of the workshop to cover non-Valve games. The addition of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare and Dungeon Defenders: Eternity will join the existing Valve-produced trio of Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

The expansion of the Steam Workshop will undoubtedly reinvigorate the games, as well as increasing the amount of content available for the titles involved. For the end-consumer, it is likely that there will be much greater choice and variation in gameplay, while content creators will also have newer avenues for them to pursue their craft. Given the varied nature of contributors - 1,500 content contributors spread through 75 countries, it is likely that this will serve to solidfy Valve's position in the video games industry as the Kingpin of PC gaming.

Are there any games in which you would like to see a more user-generated content approach taking over? Let us know in the comments!
