SMM '12 in a Nutshell

Sendi Mutiara Multimedia (SMM) 2012 is just less than a month away, featuring two DotA tournaments and some of SEA's best teams.

SMM 2012 will be held at the 13th-16th of December and it is divided into 2 different tournaments. The first 2 days will be see the SMM 1 Malaysia DotA Championship, while the latter 2 will be used for the SMM Grand National DotA Tournament (SGNDT). The event will be held at Cyberjaya, Malaysia - the country's technology and entertainment capital.

The SMM 1 Malaysia DotA Championship is an all-Malaysian event, to which 40 teams advanced from 10 qualifiers held in 10 different states. These teams would compete on the first 2 days for the approximately $6,500 top prize. More importantly, the top 8 teams (tentative, may be more or less depending on the confirming international teams) from this event would get slots in the following event, the SGNDT.

The SGNDT is of course, the main event. The advancing teams from the SMM 1 Malaysia DotA Championship will join the 14 other Malaysian teams (4 teams each from Northern, Central and Southern Qualifiers and the invited teams Orange and MuFc) and the international squads to battle it out for a hefty $18,000~ championship purse.

iG 's winning moment at SMM '11

Speaking of international teams, it is of the delight of many to know that the defending champion iG registered via the official registration channel of the event. These are the other teams that had currently registered through the tournament website, in no particular order:

SGNDT '12

Thailand MiTH-Trust Vietnam Cx
Thailand Reality Vietnam PoKerStar
China The E.Sports LanWan Club Vietnam TinhYeuDota
China Invictus Gaming Philippines Pacific Palit
Philippines iZONEGIGABYTE Philippines Pacific eMaxx
Philippines Dreamz Philippines Mineski PowerColor

Keep in mind though that registering isn't a guarantee that a team would be joining. If anything, it at least tells us the teams with the interest and plan to do so. We should have a better overview of the confirmed teams by the time the registration ends, and/or in the week leading up to the event. There is no more country limit and registration fee for international teams, but travel accommodations and lodging will not be provided for. The registration will be until the end of the month, and teams interested can still register via smm.net.my.

Some facts about SMM:

•The event started back in 2006, and has through the years developed a reputation and prize pool deserving of being named as one of the most prestigious offline DotA tournaments in the world.
•Last year's caster, Toby 'TobiWanKenobi' Dawson, will be returning to cast the event. This time though, he will be joined by David 'GoDz' Parker.
•6.76c will be the official map for the event. In comparison, Dota 2 uses the 6.76b parity (as of publication).
•Last year's SMM showcased 38 teams, including 20 non-Malaysian teams.
•Chinese teams occupied the Top 3 slots of SMM's past 4 years aside from last year, where Philippines' Mineski finished 3rd.
