Starcraft 2 Beta Comes to a Close

Today the Starcraft 2 Beta has come to a close and is going on hiatus for an unknown number of weeks

February 17th, 2010 was a long anticipated date by many Starcraft fans, as it marked the beginning of the Starcraft 2 legacy, with the release of the beta. And for 3 and a half months, countless battles raged between Starcraft 2 gamers on the new Battle.net and numerous changes were made to the beta.

With the beta coming to a close, lets take a step back, and see what changed and didn't change, as we now view the entire beta period in hindsight.

The "Static" Award: For units that have not been changed at all since the Beta began.

Protoss

Probe: This little guy still keeps mining its minerals the same way it did back in February, nothing stopping it, nothing on its mind, except harvesting resources and creating space-time rifts to warp in structures.

Carrier: This Protoss blimp is rarely used nowadays, and could be why the Carrier has not been touched by changes. It just keeps on chugging those interceptors.

Warp Prism: Not the most interesting unit, but it gets the job done, still warping in those Zealots in the back of your base, and acting as portable pylons for your warpgates.

Drone: Like it's Protoss brethren, the drone continues to chomp those minerals with its huge jaws, and is still morphing into pulsating Zerg structures.

Zergling: Spawning as twins, the Zergling withstands the test of time; still running around with it's little wings causing chaos, and still morphing into explosive sacs.

Mutalisk: Probably the least changed attacking unit in all of the Starcraft universe, this flying ghoul has had Glaive Wurms bouncing off it's enemies, and serving as the bread and butter Zerg air unit since back in '98.

Medivac: Still healing your Marines/Marauders, and still makes for a quick getaway, or a drop in the back.

The "Dynamic" Award: For most changed units:

One thing that is easy to forget because of the slick gameplay is that Starcraft 2 is still in the beta phase, and not everything is going to be perfect; and changes can, and are being made. Thus I personally am extremely excited for the second iteration of the Beta, and hope the wait isn't too long before we once again hear the clashes of battle on the Starcraft 2 battlefields!
