StarCraft II Beta Survey 3 Results

The latest survey of the StarCraft II beta has been released. Some interesting results come up as Dustin Browder comments on them briefly and talks about what the StarCraft 2 Dev team plans to change in the future

My favorite new Terran unit is:
Marauder 23.0%
Thor 19.8%
Reaper 15.2%
Viking 12.9%
Banshee 11.7%
Medivac 7.2%
Raven 7.0%
Hellion 3.3%

The Marauder at the top of the list is no surprise to Dustin, but what has surprised him is how far down the Hellion is in the chart. The Hellion is also at the top of the charts under the 'least favorite new Terran unit'. Despite the Hellion being very effective against destroying light units. There are now plans to make the Hellion a little easier to use.

One thing to consider is that the Hellion might be so high on the least favorite list because other players of other races were also voting for them. Although the Hellion might be the least favorite Terran unit, they might not be the least favorite unit for Terran players, just the least favorite for the other two races to fight against.

My least favorite new Terran unit is:
Hellion 27.8%
Thor 16.8%
Raven 10.5%
Banshee 10.2%
Reaper 9.8%
Marauder 9.7%
Viking 8.0%
Medivac 7.2%

The Thor ends up high on both lists as well. Dustin concludes that this might be because 'he does a ton of damage but is also difficult to use because of his size.' The Thor is another unit that they will look into to make it easier to use in a future patch.

My favorite new Protoss unit is:
Colossus 27.6%
Immortal 19.4%
Stalker 13.3%
Sentry 11.8%
Mothership 10.5%
Void Ray 10.2%
Warp Prism 4.2%
Phoenix 2.9%

It's no surprise that the Colossus and Immortal are at the top of this chart. The sheer damage than both units put out makes it a very easy choice to pick for any player. It is also no surprise that the Phoenix is at the bottom of this poll. There are now plans to make some changes to the Phoenix next patch to make him a little easier to use and a little more powerful. At 2.9% in the poll, it's also just as rare to see the Phoenix in a game if not less.

My least favorite new Protoss unit is:
Phoenix 23.6%
Mothership 22.3%
Void Ray 12.1%
Sentry 10.4%
Warp Prism 9.8%
Immortal 7.3%
Colossus 7.3%
Stalker 7.1%

Again, the Phoenix is at the top of the poll in the least favorite category. Dustin reiterates that they will change the Phoenix and hopefully improve the fun factor of the unit. There were no mention of changing any of the other Protoss units such as the Void Ray and the Mothership which ranked low on both polls.

My favorite new Zerg unit is:
Roach 31.9%
Queen 26.4%
Baneling 15.0%
Brood Lord 14.4%
Infestor 5.4%
Corruptor 4.6%
Overseer 2.3%

The Baneling being ahead of the Brood Lord in the polls was a surprise to Dustin. The Overseer is actually going to get a second look over to see if they could make changes in future patches to get some more abilities on the Overseer. Currently the Overseer is a detector and has the ability to spawn Changelings which are effective scouts in game.

My least favorite new Zerg unit is:
Infestor 22.2%
Baneling 17.3%
Roach 17.1%
Corruptor 14.4%
Overseer 12.9%
Brood Lord 10.1%
Queen 6.0%

Dustin states that it's a bit of a surprise to see the Infestor at the top of this list since they are seeing so many players use them to great effect. He addressed the fact that the Infested Terran ability is not that useful when compared to his other two abilities. Thus they are planning to try another ability in that slot in future patches.

Again, the poll isn't voted on by just Zerg players, so it is no surprise that Infestors, Banelings, and Roaches are the top three in being least liked. The Neural Parasite ability of the Infestor can be quite annoying in mid-game battles and Banelings have been giving Terrans a hard time since the early days of the beta.

All players however can agree on the uselessness of the Phoenix having voted it least liked on both polls. It's role in the Protoss army is very limited currently as it is not a very good anti-air unit despite it's inability to shoot ground and ability to shoot only air. The future changes to the Phoenix will no doubt be welcomed, but once they are made only time will tell if they will work.
