Global Play Has Finally Arrived

The option to switch servers at will is available at last!

Earlier today, Blizzard announced the addition of global play. Instead of having to create a new account and get a new key to play in other regions, you can now do it entirely through a menu.

Swapping freely through servers is incredibly easy and can be done through the battle.net application, the in-game menu and the Heroes login screen. However all unlocked heroes, rewards, account progress and your friend's list will not transfer over.

Players will also be able to play in regions that are not under maintenance, if their region is. Although if the region you moved to was already updated, you will have to wait until the other regions are updated as well to rejoin them. Since all of these other 'regional' accounts are still linked to your main battle.net account, any purchases made in other regions will still use your saved information, spend the same currency, and cost the same price as they would in your main region.

The system isn't perfect, it is definitely a step in the right direction. Cross region play is something people have been asking for since alpha and it's good to see it finally available. Hopefully this will mean that tournaments will no longer be region specific, and the competitive scene should flourish in turn.
