Live Tournaments Flourishing

One major concern in the wake of Black Friday and the overall worldwide economic malaise was how would live tournament poker attendance hold up. The trends in the United States and Europe had been uneven and slackening the last couple years. This summer the World Series of Poker set new records in many events, and overall. Now with a fresh batch of major tournaments to report on, it seems that the indication is that the live tournament scene is flourishing.

In the recently completed World Series of Poker Europe in Cannes, France, there were 582 players who entered the €10,400 main event. Many of those players are now playing in the European Poker Tour San Remo event that saw 837 players enter.

In the United States, the World Series of Poker Circuit series saw 1,615 players enter their event. The regional Heartland Poker Tour saw 296 players enter their latest Oklahoma event.

Some in the poker industry are crediting the adjustment of buy-ins at World Poker Tour and other tours for increased numbers. Others credit the inability to play online for many American players focusing more on their live play. Either way, a healthy live tournament scene is essential to maintain some momentum and energy to the game while U.S. government officials and Congress slowly plot forward in legislating and regulating online poker again in the world's largest market.
