A live-action trip to Night City is on the cards.
CD Projekt RED's popular action RPG Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a live-action movie adaptation. As first reported in an exclusive report by Deadline on Thursday (8 October), the game will be adapted into a live-action film through Paramount Pictures.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura, best known for producing the Transformers films, will produce the movie. His other credits include G.I. Joe, Constantine, and the 2005 Doom film adaptation.
"We're excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise. We look forward to sharing more details at the appropriate time," Michał Nowakowski, joint-CEO of CD Projekt RED, said in a post on X.
What is Cyberpunk 2077 about?
Developed by CD Projekt RED, Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world action RPG set in Night City, a sprawling metropolis in a dystopian future where powerful corporations hold much of the power.
The game follows V, a mercenary who finds themselves implanted with a biochip containing the digital consciousness of Johnny Silverhand, a legendary rockerboy and terrorist played by Keanu Reeves. As Johnny's personality gradually begins to overwrite V's own, the two must find a way to separate their consciousnesses and save V's life, leading them into conflict with the powerful Arasaka Corporation.
Since its release in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 40 million copies worldwide, while its expansion, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, has surpassed 15 million copies sold.
CD Projekt RED previously expanded the Cyberpunk 2077 universe with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an anime produced in collaboration with Japanese animation studio Trigger. Following the success of the first season, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on 20 October. The second instalment will feature a new cast of characters and a standalone story set in Night City.
Meanwhile, Paramount Pictures has also been expanding its slate of video game adaptations. A live-action Street Fighter movie is scheduled to hit cinemas on 16 October, while a film based on Call of Duty is also in development.
