Magic the Gathering is bringing God Packs to every major set as booster changes arrive in 2027

Wizards of the Coast is reshuffling what players can pull from boosters.

Magic: The Gathering is making God Packs a regular part of opening boosters. Starting in 2027, an extremely small number of MTG Booster Packs will be loaded entirely with rare and mythic rare cards, bringing back a concept that famously appeared in Journey into Nyx more than a decade ago. This time, however, God Packs are being built into every Magic Multiverse set going forward.

Wizards of the Coast announced the change on Monday (5 October) as part of a wider overhaul of Booster Packs and Collector Boosters. The new configuration will debut with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first Magic set of 2027, alongside increased access to rare and mythic foils, Japan Showcase cards in regular boosters, and several cuts to lower-rarity foil cards.

Regular Booster Packs will have the rarer pull rate at one God Pack for every 1,000 boosters.

God Packs have appeared in MTG before. Journey into Nyx famously included exceptionally rare boosters containing all 15 Gods from the Theros block, giving the term a particularly literal meaning at the time. The 2027 version expands the idea beyond a single themed set, with Wizards of the Coast defining a God Pack as a rare booster where every nonbasic card is rare or mythic rare.

How will MTG God Packs work in 2027?

God Packs will be randomly inserted into both regular Booster Packs and Collector Boosters, although the odds and contents differ between the two products.

Regular Booster Packs will have the rarer pull rate at one God Pack for every 1,000 boosters. Opening one replaces the usual mix of rarities with 14 rare or mythic rare cards: 10 non-foil cards, two non-foil Booster Fun cards, and two traditional foil Booster Fun cards. A separate God Pack celebration card is also included.

Collector Boosters will have better odds of getting a God Pack.

Collector Boosters will have substantially better odds at one God Pack in every 300 packs. Each will contain one foil land, three foil default-frame rares or mythics, three non-foil Booster Fun rares or mythics, and five foil Booster Fun rares or mythics, alongside the celebration card.

Those five foil Booster Fun slots are the same type of slot Wizards of the Coast has previously referred to as its "foil fancy slot". With five of them in a single God Pack, it is technically possible to pull multiple headliner cards from the same Collector Booster, although Wizards of the Coast says the odds of that happening are low.

What else is changing with MTG Booster Packs in 2027?

Traditional foil Japan Showcase cards will be available through the wildcard slot in regular Booster Packs beginning with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, after previously being restricted to Collector Boosters. Booster Fun refers to the special visual treatments Wizards of the Coast creates alongside standard versions of cards, including alternate artwork and frames.

The same regular Booster Packs will also get increased drop rates for foil rare and mythic rare cards, while Play Boosters are being renamed simply as Booster Packs from 2027 onwards.

What cards are being removed from MTG Booster Packs?

To make room for the new additions, regular Booster Packs will no longer include foil common or uncommon cards, and a foil will no longer be guaranteed in every pack. When a foil does appear, it will be a rare or mythic rare. Collector Boosters are losing three cards as well, with two foil commons and one foil uncommon being removed from each pack without replacements, although some foil commons and uncommons will still remain in Collector Boosters.

Wizards of the Coast said the cuts were needed to free up printing capacity for God Packs and Japan Showcase cards. "We wanted to add God Packs and include Japan Showcase cards in Booster Packs, but to do so we needed to find room in our printing capacity to enable that," Wizards of the Coast explained.

The company also confirmed that the changes will not come with an increase to MSRP. The new Booster Pack and Collector Booster configurations will take effect with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm in 2027.
