A new Uncharted game is in the works after a decade of dormancy.
Naughty Dog, the studio behind the Uncharted series, is reportedly working on an all-new entry in the franchise, more than nine years after the last Uncharted release. MP1st reported that the project is currently in development.
The new Uncharted project is said to include Nathan Drake. However, it remains unclear whether he will return as the protagonist, appear as a side character, or even just make a brief cameo.
Drake, played by Nolan North, has been the face of the franchise, starring in the first four mainline games. The most recent release, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, instead put Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross in the spotlight.
According to the report, the undisclosed project will be led by Shaun Escayg, who previously directed Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. He also served as creative director on Marvel’s Avengers, and was involved with The Last of Us: Part I.
When is the new Uncharted project expected to release?
While reports of a new Uncharted game are likely to excite fans of the franchise, it could still be a long way off.
MP1st reports that Naughty Dog plans to release the new Uncharted after its upcoming original IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, with The Last of Us Part III reportedly coming afterwards. However, the exact timing remains unknown, and development plans can change.
Intergalactic, which Naughty Dog has described as its most ambitious game yet, currently has no announced release date. But there has been positive news in development recently, with its cinematic filming finished and Neil Druckmann confirming that the game will receive a full reveal in 2027.
The Last of Us Part III, meanwhile, has yet to be officially announced, but it well aligns with recent revelations that Naughty Dog is already working on multiple projects set in The Last of Us universe.
The reported return of Uncharted would be a notable development for the franchise. The series' last new release was The Lost Legacy in 2017, although Sony has since revisited the games through collections and remasters, including Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection.
Uncharted remains one of PlayStation's most successful franchises, having sold over 41.7 million units worldwide as of December 2017, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The franchise has also expanded beyond gaming, with the 2022 Uncharted film starring Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Victor “Sully” Sullivan.
