World of Warcraft Forever dev teases Blackrock Depths-style mega dungeon

WoW players are wondering what Blizzard is hiding in Azeroth.

Getting hopelessly lost in a World of Warcraft dungeon might be back on the menu. World of Warcraft: Forever senior game designer Josh Greenfield has teased that Blizzard may be working on a massive new dungeon in the spirit of Blackrock Depths, one of WoW Classic's biggest and most notoriously labyrinthine instances.

Asked by a player for "a good BRD-like mega dungeon," Greenfield had a very short response: “Hold our beer(s).”

The image attached to his post may offer another clue, as it appears to show an entrance connected to the Timbermaw, the Furbolg faction found in the area where Blizzard has already announced Blackmaw Hold, one of Forever's new high-level dungeons. That has put Blackmaw Hold at the centre of speculation over what Greenfield may be teasing.

Is Blackmaw Hold WoW Forever's new mega dungeon?

Blizzard has not confirmed that Blackmaw Hold is the dungeon Greenfield was referring to, but the timing, and what has already been revealed about the location, will make it an obvious candidate.

Blackmaw Hold was first announced as part of World of Warcraft: Forever's new content lineup at BlizzCon 2026. World of Warcraft: Forever will launch on 4 November with nine new dungeons alongside new zones, raids, and other content.

In its What's Next panel recap, Blizzard listed Blackmaw Hold among those new dungeons and teased "unsettling corruption stirring in the depths" of the location.

Wowhead, a long-running World of Warcraft database and news site, lists Blackmaw Hold as a level 55 to 60 dungeon located behind the Furbolg Gates in northern Azshara and describes it as a "Great Furbolg City." Beyond those details, Blizzard has yet to show its bosses, layout, or how large the dungeon will actually be.

The comparison to Blackrock Depths helps explain why Greenfield's reply has drawn attention. Better known to World of Warcraft players as BRD, Blackrock Depths is the former capital of the Dark Iron Dwarves, buried deep inside Blackrock Mountain.

Wowhead's WoW Classic guide describes the five-player dungeon as "immense," noting that a full clear can take several hours and that groups often split it across multiple runs. A separate Wowhead dungeon guide points to its maze-like layout and more than 20 bosses, with no single definitive route through the dungeon.

For someone asking Blizzard for a "BRD-like mega dungeon," then, the appeal goes beyond stuffing more bosses into one instance. The comparison calls back to a much larger space where figuring out the route, choosing which encounters to tackle, and simply finding the way through are part of the experience. Greenfield's "Hold our beer(s)" response suggests Forever may have something designed along similar lines, although Blizzard has not said how closely any of its new dungeons will actually follow BRD's structure.

Blackmaw Hold would fit the idea on paper. Its level 55 to 60 range puts it near the top of Forever's dungeon progression, while the Furbolg city setting leaves plenty of room for something larger and more layered than a straightforward boss run. It is not the only high-level dungeon coming with Forever, however. Shaper's Terrace in Un'Goro is intended for levels 58 to 60, while Alcaz Prison is aimed at levels 48 to 53, and Blizzard has not publicly tied either of them to Greenfield's tease.

For now, Blackmaw Hold is still only the leading theory. Greenfield's response does at least suggest that the Forever team has heard players asking for another enormous dungeon they can disappear into for hours, with more likely to become clear as World of Warcraft: Forever approaches its 4 November launch.
