The Nintendo Direct has unveiled the next 2D Metroid game, Metroid Ravenous.
The next 2D Metroid game has been announced, with Metroid Ravenous set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on 28 January, 2027. The game was revealed during the Nintendo Direct, alongside a special edition and two new amiibo figures set to launch on release day.

Metroid Ravenous is coming to Nintendo Switch 2
Metroid Ravenous is officially the next 2D entry in Nintendo's flagship franchise, becoming the sixth mainline 2D title that follows after Metroid Dread, which was released in October 2021. It will once again be developed by the Spanish studio, MercurySteam, the same studio that had worked on Metroid Dread and Metroid: Samus Returns.
The reveal trailer showcased nearly two minutes of footage from the upcoming game, featuring narration, a sharp and vibrant visual style, and glimpses of its combat.
It appears that in Metroid Ravenous, protagonist Samus Aran now has to feed on her enemies to survive, as she narrates an attack that leaves her stranded and forces her to “eat or be eaten”.
“I was attacked by unknown assailants and sustained grave injuries... I don’t know where I am. Getting back to the surface won’t be easy. My chances of getting off this moon are slim at best,” Samus says.
“I will survive, and I will make it home, even if I have to feed on my enemies to do so. It’s eat or be eaten.”
Metroid Ravenous will launch alongside two Metroid amiibo figures featuring Samus and a Chozo Statue. A third amiibo figure–Samus in a Metroid Suit–has also been teased as part of the Special Edition package, which will also include a SteelBook and a copy of the game.
Metroid Ravenous will launch digitally and at retail for the Nintendo Switch 2 worldwide on 28 January, 2027.
