Wizards of the Coast said that it will still welcome pitches from Giant Skull.
A Dungeons & Dragons videogame from Giant Skull, the studio led by Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order director Stig Asmussen, has been cancelled after its publishing agreement with Wizards of the Coast was terminated earlier this year.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the project was still in early development when the deal between Hasbro, Wizards of the Coast, and Giant Skull came to an end, according to a report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier. The partnership between Wizards of the Coast and Giant Skull had only been announced last summer.
Why was the Dungeons & Dragons game cancelled?
Wizards of the Coast told Bloomberg that it decided not to “pursue an early concept” from Giant Skull. However, the company also said it is still taking pitches from the developer. Asmussen suggested that the split was amicable, saying that “things are good” at the studio.
Giant Skull was founded by Stig Asmussen, the veteran director known for God of War III and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, after his exit from Electronic Arts in 2023. He later built a team of seasoned industry talent, including several developers who had worked with him on the Star Wars Jedi series during his time at EA.
In an interview with The Game Business last year, John Hight revealed that Stig Asmussen had originally shown Giant Skull’s prototype for an original IP before discussions shifted toward using a Hasbro franchise instead. Hight said the team explored several options before eventually landing on Dungeons & Dragons, which led to the now-cancelled project.
Wizards of the Coast president John Hight described Giant Skull as “the perfect fit” for the project. At the time, Asmussen said the game would feature “immersive storytelling, heroic combat and exhilarating traversal that players will fully embrace.”
The original announcement also suggested the game was leaning towards an action-adventure style similar to Asmussen’s previous projects.
What other Dungeons & Dragons games are still in development?
Apart from the cancelled project, other Dungeons & Dragons games seem to continue moving forward. Warlock, announced last year, is a third-person action adventure game from Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance developer Invoke Studios. The game is currently due for release in 2027.
