Valve's new Steam Controller launches and sells out in minutes

Valve’s newest hardware disappeared within minutes, with only brief flashes of stock surfacing between refreshes.

It looks like many players want to grab Valve's newest Steam Controller. The new Steam Controller went live on 4 May and was snatched up within minutes, with the Steam Store struggling to keep up. Even so, stock has been briefly reappearing throughout the day, giving players small windows to try their luck.

The Steam Controller is Valve’s second attempt at a PC game pad following its 2015 release, and the redesign takes clear cues from the Steam Deck. The updated version keeps the signature haptic trackpads but shifts to a more familiar layout. It also adds features like Grip Sense and a touch-activated gyro system, aiming to give players more precise control across PC titles.

What happened during the Steam Controller launch on 4 May?

The Steam Controller became available at 1 PM EST (1 AM SGT) for US$99, and demand hit instantly. Players rushed in, only to run into purchase errors, slow loading pages, and failed checkouts.

Outage tracker Downdetector showed a spike in reports right as the controller went live. Many users reached the payment stage but couldn’t complete their transactions, while others were blocked earlier in the process due to heavy traffic. The store page initially showed a three to five business day wait, which quickly stretched to six to 10 days. Around 30 minutes after launch, the listing was labelled “out of stock.”

Can you still buy the Steam Controller?

Since the initial sell-out, the controller has been popping back into stock in short bursts before disappearing again. There have been confirmed moments where the order button reappeared, including a brief window of time, which Polygon reported happened around 2:40 PM EST (2:40 AM SGT). However, even during these restocks, some users still hit errors before completing checkout.

That said, chances of getting your hands on the new Steam Controller are quite slim, for now. If you’re trying to secure one, your best bet is to keep refreshing the store page and be ready to move fast when stock returns. Valve has yet to comment on the sustained availability of supply.
