What is Subnautica 2 about?
Set on a new alien planet, Subnautica 2 follows a group of Pioneers sent to establish a fresh start after being driven from their home by conflict. The mission quickly unravels when the colony ship CICADA malfunctions, leaving players stranded.
With the ship’s AI insisting the mission must continue, survival becomes the priority. Each dive pushes players deeper into an unfamiliar ecosystem, uncovering both the planet’s biodiversity and the mystery behind the failed expedition.
Subnautica 2’s survival gameplay, vehicles, and exploration systems
Survival gameplay expands with new tools and traversal options. Players will explore vibrant underwater biomes using the Tadpole submersible, while building and upgrading bases to stay safe between expeditions.
Crafting, resource gathering, and progression all return, with more equipment and vehicles planned over time. From small creatures to towering Leviathans, the ecosystem plays a central role in both survival and storytelling.
Can you play Subnautica 2 co-op?
Subnautica 2 keeps its single-player roots, but introduces optional online co-op for up to four players.
At launch, players can choose from four pre-designed characters, with more customisation options planned throughout Early Access. Whether exploring alone or with friends, the focus remains on discovery, scanning lifeforms, uncovering ruins, and adapting to a world that constantly pushes back.

Subnautica 2 development timeline and controversy
The road to Early Access has not been straightforward for Subnautica 2, with several high-profile disputes surrounding its development.
In July 2025, publisher Krafton removed the leadership of Unknown Worlds Entertainment, with co-founders Charlie Cleveland, Max McGuire, and Ted Gill dismissed ahead of the game’s original launch window.
The situation intensified when the game was delayed from 2025 into 2026. The former leadership claimed the delay was linked to a US$250 million bonus tied to a 2025 release, while Krafton maintained it was necessary for development.
Legal action followed, with the founders filing a 58-page lawsuit for wrongful termination. Krafton responded with a countersuit, alleging that the trio had abandoned the project and mishandled confidential files. In March 2026, a Delaware court ruled that Krafton had breached its contract, ordering the reinstatement of Ted Gill as CEO.
Subnautica 2 heads into Early Access on 14 May, with development now back under its original leadership, and focus shifting to the game’s first public build.
