Nationwide Pokémon Centre events cancelled, following stabbing incident at Tokyo Pokémon Centre

All April events at Pokémon Centres in Japan–except for two–have been cancelled following a recent tragedy.

Fans intending to visit Pokémon Centres this month have been advised to reconsider their plans, as The Pokémon Company has announced the cancellation of all events across Japan until 30 April. This decision follows the stabbing incident at its Tokyo branch, which claimed two lives last week.

According to GameWatch, events ranging from regular character meet-and-greets (Pokémon Greetings) and trading card game sessions, to training activities have been cancelled for the entire month. The only exceptions are the City League TCG Tournament and the Preliminary Tournament for the Pokémon GO Japan Championships 2026.

Even so, these tournaments will undergo operational changes to enhance safety. Matches will not be broadcast on-site, and spectators will not be permitted to attend in person. Planned commemorative gifts for spectators have also been cancelled.

Why are events being cancelled at Japanese Pokémon Centres?

The company cited “unforeseen circumstances” as the official reason for the cancellations, though the decision is widely understood to be linked to the recent incident. The suspension of events throughout the month may allow time to review and strengthen safety measures, as well as to show respect for the deceased.

What happened at the Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo?

On 26 March, a 21-year-old female employee at the Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo was attacked by a 26-year-old man, who stabbed her with a knife before inflicting injuries on himself. Both later died from their wounds.

Following the incident, the store has been closed indefinitely, as a police investigation continues and safety protocols are reviewed.

Investigations have revealed that the suspect had previously been in a relationship with the victim, and had been reported and arrested multiple times for stalking, particularly targeting her. This led to a restraining order being issued against him.

The investigation remains ongoing.
