Amazon’s Tomb Raider halts production after Sophie Turner sustains minor injury

Production is reportedly set to resume in two weeks.

The in-progress Tomb Raider live-action series by Amazon MGM Studios has paused production following minor injuries sustained by Lara Croft actress Sophie Turner, as reported by Deadline.

“Sophie Turner recently experienced a minor injury. As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover. We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible,” an Amazon Studios spokesperson said to Deadline.

The statement did not clarify whether Turner sustained the injury whilst filming on set, but reports indicate that production will shut down for roughly two weeks, with staff continuing to be paid in the meantime.

What is Amazon’s Tomb Raider series?

Tomb Raider is one of the most popular video game franchises, first launched in 1996, and has produced multiple sequels and spin-offs. The game introduced an archaeologist-adventurer, Lara Croft, who has become one of the most iconic video game characters of all time.

While the game itself is already legendary, it has also produced several popular adaptations–most notably those starring A-list actress Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s. The most recent Tomb Raider film featured Alicia Vikander as the protagonist in a 2018 adaptation, which did not perform as strongly as its predecessors.

After several years, Amazon announced plans to revive the Tomb Raider franchise in 2023, appointing Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the developer for its Amazon Prime series. Filming began in mid-January this year, revealing early looks at Sophie Turner’s version of Lara Croft.

Turner’s portrayal received mixed reactions. While many praised her for an accurate interpretation–complete with the iconic red-tinted glasses–others were less convinced, with some comparing her to Angelina Jolie’s earlier portrayal and suggesting she does not quite capture the same presence.

Who are on the cast of Amazon’s Tomb Raider?

Amazon’s Tomb Raider has revealed several cast members who will appear alongside Sophie Turner’s Lara Croft. The main cast includes Alien star Sigourney Weaver as Evelyn Wallis and Jason Isaacs as Atlas DeMornay (Lara’s uncle).

The supporting cast includes Martin Bobb-Semple, Bill Paterson, Celia Imrie, Jack Bannon, and John Heffernan.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge leads the production as creator, writer, and executive producer. She is supported by Chad Hodge as co-showrunner and Jonathan Van Tulleken as director and executive producer.

Amazon MGM Studios will fund and distribute the series on its Amazon Prime platform, in collaboration with Tomb Raider rights holder Crystal Dynamics, alongside Story Kitchen and Legendary, both of which specialise in adaptations.
