Mortal Kombat III confirmed ahead of Mortal Kombat II's release as studios bet big on fan demand

Round two of the saga isn’t over, but round three is already preparing to strike.

It feels like only yesterday that we were stepping back into the tournament, but Mortal Kombat III is already on the way. Even though Mortal Kombat II hasn’t reached cinemas yet, the next chapter in the brutal saga is officially in motion.

The news dropped during New York Comic Con 2025 (courtesy of IGN), where screenwriter Jeremy Slater revealed that studios Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema are so confident in the franchise’s trajectory, that they’ve already greenlit Mortal Kombat 3. In fact, Slater has reportedly begun drafting the script, just months before the sequel makes it to the big screen.

"New Line and Warner Bros. are thrilled with the direction of Mortal Kombat II," Slater told an excited crowd. "They believe there’s a huge, untapped fanbase, so they’ve asked me to start crafting the next chapter right now."

This confidence isn’t without reason. The red-band teaser for Mortal Kombat II did well, racking up over 11 million views on the official Warner Bros. YouTube page alone.

Studios confident in the future of Mortal Kombat movies

The 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot introduced a mix of returning and new characters, including Lewis Tan’s Cole Young, Hiroyuki Sanada’s Scorpion, and Josh Lawson’s Kano. Its sequel will continue their story while bringing in more familiar faces from the games, such as Karl Urban as Johnny Cage and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana.

Mortal Kombat II is being produced by New Line Cinema and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, with Simon McQuoid returning as director. The upcoming film will reportedly feature larger-scale battles and explore more of the tournament’s lore.

While Mortal Kombat II is set to hit cinemas on 15 May, 2026, Mortal Kombat III currently has no confirmed release date. However, with the script already in development, production on the third film is expected to follow soon after the sequel’s debut.
