Square Enix is making another Octopath Traveler game.
The acclaimed HD-2D RPG series Octopath Traveler has unveiled its latest installment in this week’s Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase. Octopath Traveler 0 is a prequel that takes place in the realm of Orsterra, allowing players to create their own protagonist and rebuild their hometown after it was reduced to ashes.

Octopath Traveler 0 announced as series prequel
The Octopath Traveler RPG series is returning to Ortsterra, the setting of its first installment, with a prequel. Octopath Traveler 0 takes players back to the realm for what Square Enix calls “a journey of your own creation.” Indeed, this game seems to be emphasising its role-playing aspects with new town-building and character-customising gameplay.
Here’s how Square Enix describes the new title:
“This exciting entry to the series brings all-new features and returning core elements from the series, including the series’ iconic HD-2D graphics blending retro pixel art and 3D CG art, Path Actions to interact with other characters in various ways, the Break and Boost battle system which can turn the tide of battle, and more. And for the first time in series history, fans will play through the eyes of their own customized protagonist and be able to rebuild their hometown after great destruction is brought to it. Embark on a journey of your own creation.”
That’s right, Octopath Traveler 0 will finally allow players to step into the shoes of their very own customisable characters. It is unclear if this series has any deeper connections to the somewhat standalone sequel Octopath Traveler 2, but it certainly has a few connections to the first game and its mobile prequel, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent.
Octopath Traveler 0 will launch on 4 December, 2025, on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
