Destiny 2 reveals two new expansions including Star Wars-inspired 'Renegades’ DLC

This year, the game will have two new expansions, which includes the Star Wars-inspired Renegades, alongside new gameplay updates and seasonal content.

Destiny 2 fans have plenty to look forward to, as Bungie unveiled what's next for the game during the Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate Reveal livestream on 7 May.  During the stream, Bungie revealed two major expansions, premium content passes, crossover events, and a substantial update to the core gameplay systems, all coming later this year.

The Year of Prophecy roadmap revealed

The stream provided insights into Bungie’s plans for the future, focusing on several core updates to game systems that aim to refresh how Destiny 2 feels for both newer and veteran players. Starting with the Year of Prophecy, this new structure introduces four major content beats each year: two paid expansions and two major updates available to all players.

These major updates will bring new activities, Exotic Missions, new gear and rewards (including Exotic weapons), and more. The exciting part is that this new approach ensures all players can experience the evolving game world together, as no paid access is required to enjoy seasonal activities.

First expansion: The Edge of Fate begins a new saga

The first expansion, The Edge of Fate, arrives on 15 July and kicks off the Fate Saga, a brand-new storyline that takes over following the conclusion of the Light and Darkness Saga in 2024. The expansion brings new story missions, destinations, gear, a dungeon, weapons, and a new raid.

A large-scale update titled Ash and Iron will follow on 9 September, reworking the sandbox meta and introducing new seasonal events, modifiers, and challenges. Both Edge of Fate and Ash and Iron include their own rewards pass, forming the foundation of the game’s Reclamation Season content structure.

New Destination: Kepler

The Edge of Fate expansion will introduce Kepler, a new destination inspired by the puzzle-solving and pathfinding challenges of Destiny 2's dungeons. Kepler will encourage deep exploration, mystery, and player-driven discovery, featuring new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.

A key feature of Kepler is the abundant dark matter energy, which powers the destination's abilities. The new Matterspark ability allows Guardians to bind to dark matter, changing forms to squeeze through tight spaces, jump and dash across terrain, or become a rolling force of destruction.

Additional abilities include the Relocator Cannon, which uses Fallen dark matter technology to teleport players across the environment, and Mattermorph, which allows Guardians to manipulate their surroundings using the combined forces of dark matter and Strand.

Second expansion: Star Wars inspiration shines in Renegades

Later this year, Bungie will release Destiny 2: Renegades on 2 December. This new expansion is a Lucasfilm-branded crossover, clearly drawing inspiration from Star Wars. Its title design mimics the cinematic feel of the Star Wars franchise, and early teasers show off lightsaber-style weapons and sci-fi blasters evocative of a galaxy far, far away.

Earlier this year, Destiny 2 held a Star Wars event featuring Covert Ranger armour, a Ghost Shell resembling the second Death Star from Return of the Jedi, and several other themed items. Notably, lightsabers were missing from that update. This new expansion content, which arrives as part of the Year of Prophecy release schedule, seems to be making up for that omission.

Renegades will introduce a new story arc, additional gear, a raid, and weapons, and it will launch alongside the ‘Lawless Season’ – a premium rewards pass similar to what’s offered in the Reclamation Season.

Bungie also revealed a trio of Dark Side skins for the game’s Hunter, Titan, and Warlock classes, based on General Grievous, Darth Vader, and Kylo Ren. They’ll be available as part of the Destiny 2: Year of Prophecy Ultimate Edition, which also includes another expansion–The Edge of Fate–due out in July.

Details on Renegades are still limited, but it appears the expansion may include more than just themed cosmetics. The teaser trailer shows Guardians speeding through a desert world that looks strikingly similar to Tatooine. During a livestream on Tuesday, Bungie developers confirmed that the setting is within the Star Wars universe.

All upcoming content falls under the Destiny 2: Year of the Prophecy package, with an Ultimate Edition granting access to both expansions and all seasonal updates. Players can read the full recap of everything that was revealed in the Year of Prophecy recap via the game's official website.
