Dota 2 Esports World Cup kicks off with action-packed Group Stage opener

The Dota 2 EWC Group Stage will cut the initial 24 teams down to 16 across five days of action.

The Dota 2 tournament at the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2026 kicked off on Tuesday (7 July) with 24 of the best Dota 2 teams in the world beginning a battle for World Cup glory and the lion's share of US$750,000 out of the US$2 million prize pool.

The action in the Dota 2 EWC begins in the Group Stage from 7 to 12 July, where the 24 teams have been split into four groups of six teams each to play in a single round-robin with best-of-two matches. Each day of Group Stage action in the Dota 2 EWC features a total of 12 matches, split between three matches for each group.

The top team from each group will advance directly to the Playoffs, the second to fourth-placed teams will move to the Survival Stage, while the two bottom finishers will be among the first to be eliminated.

After the opening day of the Group Stage, GamerLegion lead in Group A, Aurora Gaming and Nigma Galaxy share the top spot in Group B, PARIVISION and Vici Gaming (VG) are tied for the top seed of Group C, while 1w Team claimed the an early advantage in a tightly-contested Group D.

Read on as we break down all of the action in the opening day of the Dota 2 EWC:

GamerLegion take an early lead in Group A

North America's GamerLegion are off to a good start in the Dota 2 EWC, thanks in large part to the heavyweights of Group A splitting their opening matches. Team Falcons and BetBoom Team were pit against each other to kick off the action in the group, with the match ending in a 1-1 tie. China's Xtreme Gaming faced an easier opponent in their first match in Rune Eaters Esports, but failed to capitalise as they were forced to a 1-1 draw.

GamerLegion, on the other hand, took care of business by soundly sweeping Poor Rangers to get a much-needed 2-0 cushion in what is looking like a very competitive group. It remains to be seen if the North American squad can hold onto the top spot, but this early victory will go long a way towards securing them a spot in the next stage of the tournament.

Aurora and Nigma Galaxy top Group B

While Group A was considered a competitive group, Group B had two clear favourites in Aurora and Team Liquid, with the rest of the teams running a tight race behind those two heavyweights. Aurora started strong as expected, but Liquid stumbled in their opening match and left the door open for a rising Nigma Galaxy squad to be the group's second front runner after day one.

Aurora made short work of Level UP in their opening match, with the series ending in just under 58 minutes of total game time. Meanwhile, Nigma Galaxy scored back-to-back 36-minute wins over L1GA TEAM to sweep their own debut match of the tournament. Liquid also looked like they would start strong against South America's PlayTime, but the latter dominated the second game of their series to force the group favourite to an unexpected 1-1 draw.

Thanks to their strong start, Aurora are in prime position to secure a direct berth to the Playoffs. Liquid should recover from their early stumble, but they will have to play catch-up while also trying to stave off Nigma Galaxy. The latter should at least be a lock for the Survival Stage, but they could still play spoiler if they maintain their strong form.

PARIVISION and Vici Gaming tie for top spot in Group C

Group C featured one of the biggest favourites in the tournament in PARIVISION, who opened their campaign with an easy 2-0 sweep over South America's Team Nemesis. China's VG also got off to a running start by dispatching REKONIX, earning them the shared top spot with PARIVISION after the opening day of the Group Stage.

But while the other two matches of the group clearly favoured one team over the other, the matchup between Team Spirit and MOUZ ended up being much more competitive than expected. Spirit opened the series by pulling off an incredible 69-minute comeback, only for MOUZ to grind them down in 53 minutes to end things in a 1-1 draw.

With Spirit looking vulnerable thanks to their draw with MOUZ, PARIVISION should easily maintain their hold over the top spot in Group C and cruise to the Playoffs. With all due respect to Nemesis and REKONIX, the Top 4 will very likely be rounded out by VG, Spirit, and MOUZ. Those three will be fighting over the second seed, which will give them an easier path through the Survival Stage to join PARIVISION in the Playoffs.

1win take early lead in Group D as Yandex stumble versus OG

Group D is looking like the most tightly-contested group of the preliminary stage of the tournament. It featured two heavyweights in 1win and Team Yandex; three contenders in OG, LGD Gaming, and Virtus.pro (VP); and IC x Insanity as the lone underdog.

Many expected 1win and Yandex to be the early front runners of Group D, but only 1win had an expected start as they swept IC x Insanity. Yandex looked like they would sweep their opening match against Southeast Asia's OG, but the Filipino squad managed to force a commendable 1-1 draw against the team many considered to be the biggest favourites of the tournament.

Meanwhile, the LGD and VP matchup ended up being the longest series of day one. VP won the series opener in a 76-minute grinder, but LGD forced the match to a 1-1 tie by pulling off a 61-minute comeback.

With the competition in Group D looking this close early on, who ends up taking the group's sole Playoff spot is anyone's guess. Yandex remains the odds-on favourite, but 1win's strong start can give them the edge later on. That then leaves the two spots in the Survival Stage up for grabs between three solid contenders in OG, LGD, and VP. And with all due respect to IC x Insanity, they will have to face an uphill battle just to stay above water.

What is the Dota 2 Esports World Cup?

The Dota 2 tournament at the Esports World Cup 2026 will be the last Tier 1 tournament of the 2025-2026 competitive Dota 2 season before it culminates in The International 2026 in August. With many of the teams competing in the EWC also qualified for this year's Dota 2 world championship tournament, it should serve as a good preview for the battle for the Aegis of Champions next month.

The Dota 2 EWC features 24 of the best Dota 2 teams in the world and will take place from 7 to 19 July in the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles in Paris, France. The teams will be fighting for EWC glory and the lion's share of US$750,000 out of the tournament's US$25 million prize pool.

The Dota 2 EWC is split into three stages; the Group Stage from 7 to 12 July, the Survival Stage from 14 to 15 July, and the Playoffs from 16 to 19 July.

The Group Stage will see the 24 teams split into four groups of six teams each to play in a single round-robin with best-of-two matches. The top team from each group will advance directly to the Playoffs, the second to fourth-placed teams will move to the Survival Stage, while the two bottom finishers will be among the first to be eliminated.

The Survival Stage will feature the 12 teams that finished third to fourth in their respective groups during the Group Stage, with four spots in the Playoffs up for grabs in a single-elimination bracket with best-of-three matches. The Survival Stage will open with the third and fourth seeds from different groups taking each other on, with the winners moving on to face the second place teams for the four Playoff spots.

Finally, the Playoffs will be a single-elimination bracket featuring the four teams that finished as the top seeds of their groups in the Group Stage as well as the four teams that made it out of the Survival Stage. All matches in the Playoffs will be a best-of-three except for the grand finals, which will be a full best-of-five series.
