NA gets three slots for TI8; Valve releases regional qualifier information

Dota 2 Cristy “Pandoradota2” Ramadani

Right on the heels of Team Liquid's dramatic China Supermajor championship victory, Valve announced the regional qualifier teams and allocation of spots for The International 8.

The qualifiers for The International 2018 are getting ready to kick off in just merely days. With the DPC system implemented this last season, the path for a TI8 direct invite was clear and transparent. As teams competed for the highly coveted points, the rules were also clear and enforced that any teams failing to meet the requirements would be ineligible for a direct or regional invite regardless of points earned.

With the last team registration and rosters locking back in February, many of the higher profile teams and players made changes and have been relegated to the open qualifiers.

The results of such are that most regions have had only a handful of teams directly invited to the regional qualifiers, giving more teams a shot at getting into the fray for a place at TI8.

The regional qualifier format has yet to be announced, but Valve has already let the participating and hopeful teams know exactly what is at stake.

Seeming to do away with the Wildcard slots, ten teams will advance from the regional qualifiers to compete at The International 2018 in August. This year the slots have been designated as follows:

North America: 3 teams will advance to TI8
South America: 1 team will advance
Europe: 1 team will advance
CIS: 1 team will advance
SEA: 2 teams will advance
China: 2 teams will advance

  • Bruno "BrN" Inácio ,
EU 1 slot and NA 3 stlots hahahaha valve so ridiculous
    • allan "exquisite08" ryan ,
The reason maybe, Liquid and secret came from Europe already. and right now , there are no representatives from NA. Maybe that's the reason. They will have 3. to make it the same with Eu.
      • Bruno "BrN" Inácio ,
Gabe wants American players on Ti8. Even EG disappointed a lot. But I do not think it will happen.
    • Nathanael "Leanath" Centellini ,
Are you serious? Have you even looked at the teams of each region? Eu for starters is a joke right now beside the already invited teams. SA lol don't even get me started and china + sea + cis doesnt have alot of teams in the qualifiers that would beat any of optic,VGJs or eg. So yea this is more than fair and this i'm saying as a Swede. NA right now is far ahead of any of the other regions if you don't look at the invited TI teams
      • James "Yared" A ,
+1 2 NA teams suddenly caught up in perceived strength. And indeed most of EU and CIS are still in the dark with our current patch.
  • luis "babyknight" knight ,
based on the DPC ranking, 3 slots for NA are pretty reasonable as you got EG Optic VGJstorm and COL. As for EU the 1slots= ?OG
    • Aoi "alkermes" Kasuga ,
Sure. EU is ASSest region right now. NA=Optic EG VG.J SEA=Fnatic TNC(Mineski invited) EU=OG Its pretty legit.
  • James "Yared" A ,
Looks biased but this has to happen for the home crowd or we get a somewhat awkward show. Other factors like media visibility for potential growth or winning new players over other games. 6 teams for CN like I said in the past with many others expecting 3 for SEA and again SA gets one.
  • Raditya "Raadtraa" Putra ,
I thought each regions should have at least 2 representatives (including SA) at TI8. Get 1 more for SA region from CN should do it. And as we see that big teams in this season are from CN, NA, SEA, CIS, EU (respectively). I see no problem that NA has 3 slots. But, if it should be corrected, better give it to CIS or EU. But still, NA regions is more competitive than CIS/EU.
  • Nathanael "Leanath" Centellini ,
This is totally legit, saying anything else is just retarded as fuck. Optic, VGJs and EG are ahead of all the regions except sea, and they have 2 slots for their 2 only good teams
