Rat Dota on the retreat? February brings v6.80 and a twist to the meta game

The numbers are taken from datDota. We are aware that there are some inaccuracies, as we ourselves had inconsistencies on the queries. However, given the inputs, it still seems to be a fair enough representation of last month. And yes, we do have our bans/picks from our site. Sadly, while they work well for references, the database and queries are still a bit disorganized.

We'll be making a hero-statistic feature, as this one, every month. With that, expect more information and trends on the following installments. We will also provide our number summaries for select future tournaments. If you have anything in mind, or you have a suggestion or tip that you want us to know, feel free to drop it on the comments section below.

With all that said, let's move forward to February. Upon a quick labeling of the 553 matches recorded on February, the count showed us what may be expected numbers. Out of the 553, 357 were western games while 196 were eastern games. Expected, as the Lunar new year put a number of Eastern tournaments on hold.

Most of the western matches are from the joinDOTA League and the MLG-TKO, while most games from the East are from various Southeast-Asian and Korean tournaments. There are but three games from China, which were the early rounds of the Sina Cup's qualifiers.

Note: Despite 553 matches are on record, only 514 drafts were analyzed on the hero counts. Reloaded games, among others, may be the reason why other games are not accounted for despite having their drafts added.

Most picked

Crystal Maiden is the best hero not worthy of a ban, as proved by her being picked a total of 205 times last month. The 280 move speed makes her even more fragile than she already is, but her flexible skill-set allows her to blend well on many kinds of strategies. While she isn't banned a lot, that isn't generally the case for others as 12 of the 17 heroes below are banned more than they are picked.

Most banned

As mentioned above, familiar faces grace our most banned list. However, entering are heroes like Slark, Outworld Destroyer and Bristleback - heroes on which the teams aren't really thrilled on playing against. Emphasis of this is given to Outworld Destroyer; while teams do not want to lane against him, it looks like not many want to play with him either. With the faster-phased games and lots of team pushes of today, only specialized lineups pick him, as seen on only 42 picks against 198 bans.

Most contested

Nyx, Invoker and Visage are the big three last month - as the three of them are far more contested than the other heroes. While Nyx and Visage have been known to be favorites, Invoker rises up due to his increased versatility. Bans greatly influence this part, as only three heroes are picked more than they are banned. The most contested heroes seem to be evenly varied among the main attributes, with five strength and agility heroes and six intelligence heroes.

Top win rates (for heroes picked > 50 times)

Interestingly enough, ten out of the 17 heroes with the highest win rates are not on the list of the most contested heroes. Two of those heroes which are seemingly overlooked is Naga Siren and Disruptor (picked 72 and 57 times respectively), both with almost a 60% win rate. Also stellar is Mirana, who has achieved an equally high win rate, despite being the second most played hero last month.

Kills / deaths / assists (for heroes picked > 50 times)

These may not be the most relevant numbers, but they still tell a story. Morphling leads the pack on kills per game, with the jumping Storm Spirit and Slark following. Having most deaths are the fragile support heroes, with the exception of the offlane-bound initiator in Clockwerk. Leaders in assists, are as expected, heroes with multiple AoE abilities.

Tidbits

We also came across some numbers which may not be significant, but are interesting nonetheless.

  • The Radiant seems to be the side of choice if you want to go with the odds, owning a 52% win rate as opposed to the 48% of the Dire.
  • Picking second is also more favorable, based on results last February. First picks only win 48.2% of the time, while the second picks win 51.8% of the time.
  • Both Spirit Breaker and Ogre Magi has an amazing 100% win rate, with one and two games on record respectively.
  • There are three Meepo games recorded, with a lame 33.33% win rate. However, despite that, he has the highest kills per game (without considering a minimum number of games) at a scary 10.3 per match.
  • Captain's mode newcomer Ember Spirit is making waves, particularly on his potential to deal critical damage on enemy heroes. He has a 20-15 win-loss record, with a very high 9.4 kills per game average.
