Korean final to end DreamHack Winter 2011

Posted by Radoslav "Nydra" Kolev 2 months ago

HerO has slayed yet another team-mate of his during his DreamHack Winter run. On the stage of DreamArena, the protoss ace of team Liquid demolished Ret to advance to the grand final with a 3-1 victory.

HerO's crusade towards his first ever grand final began on Antiga with a double stargate phoenix/void ray opening which Ret could not scout for all his overlords were worth.

Understandably, Ret had was under heavy pressure but the macro beast knew prefectly well how to behave in such situations. His hydra tech came momentarily and the gaps in his defenses closed quickly. Ret continued pumping hydras also adding roaches to his composition but the production tab showed a spire and later a +1 air attack in the making. Air units did not make an appearance until greater spire was done and with brood lords now in his possession, Ret moved out to pressure Hero's centre expansion. The protoss, however, was hesitant about giving away this position to say the least and an offensive blink underneath Ret's brood lords led to their immediate death and the GG.

Game two was played on Daybreak and saw Hero opening with 5-gate and +1 attack but later transition into a dark shrine. That set Hero quite behind supply-wise which was the green light for Ret to enjoy the style of zerg he likes best - power up drones, max out lightning fast and batter down you opponent who can only sit and heed your overwhelming swarm of units.

For their third map, HerO chose Metalopolis and went on to completely fool Ret with yet another DT opening. HerO created a diversion with a few zealots and stalkers at Ret's ramp, drawing zerg's attention away from his third which he hit with four DTs, slashing it down in seconds. To his credit, Ret did his best to recover from this disadvantage but that early loss was the worst thing that could have happened to Ret. The Dutch tried to come strong with ling run-byes and roach surrounds but Hero seemed to be everywhere. 2-1.

The fourth map seemed to be extremely beneficient for Ret as Tal'Darim Altar would provide a lot of opportunities for him to get his macro going. The zerg was soon sitting on four bases and turned his gaze to Hero's third - a savoury dish to ravish to say the leaast. Ret persistently sent army after an army but the Nexus stood solid agaist all odds. Meanwhile, among all this chaos, HerO managed to zealot-kill Ret's fourth and instead of re-expanding immediately, Ret switched to, basically, an all-in mode , hoping that his roach supply advantage would be enough. That it wasn't as HerO's late-game composition had storms to back it up and as the supply difference began leaning towards protoss' favour, Ret typed out, wishing his team-mate good luck in the final.

HerO moves on to face Puma in the last match of DreamHack Winter 2011. The Liquid protoss looks amazingly strong and it seems that could be his tournament. HerO showed no mercy in either the group stage or the play-off bracket and has grown to be the most feared player at this tournament. His recent history versus Puma also speaks in his favour (2-1 victory at Providence), but the EG terran is looking stronger as ever. Puma is known for his tournament consistency and deep knowledge, understanding and excellency at the TvP match-up so predicting this final series is a sketchy job at best. Before the night is past, though, DreamHack will crown its Winter 2011 champion after what we can hope to be a PvT Bo7 to remember.

Foreigners, are you even trying? GG any country besides korea. 2 B-Team koreans have just decimated a non-korean heavy tournament. I'm really starting to wonder if its even possible to keep up with koreans at this point.

@4 Wtf how in the world do you come to that conclusions considering the current facts of SC2 ?

The gap between Koreans and non Koreans is a lot more narrow nowadays than ever before in the history of stracraft !

HuK,Naniwa,Stephano,Idra we have 4 foreigners in the TOP 20 SC2 players of the world ! Has this ever been the case before ?
With Huk and Naniwa we even have 2 Protoss foreigners being TOP 6 Protoss in the World right now

Lets comapre this to how the Situation was 6 Month ago when every TOP50 Korean noname Ladder guy could kill the best foreign competition with ease.
Every TOP 10 player no matter if Protoss,Zerg or Terran except for Jinro was a korean
Few month ago basically every tournament Koreans attended they got place 1-6 with total rape domination
Its totally different right now.

I dont even want to look at Starcraft 1 , where No Foreigner was ever TOP60
after 2004

Of course the best players are still Koreans

Leenock , MvP,MMA, Nestea, DrG and maybe Oz who had some strong results lately

But overall foreigner scene has never been as strong at any point in Starcraft history as it is nowadays !
We have plenty of upcomming guys from Wc3 who just now start to get good like Grubby and Sase.
Besides that with Huk,Stephano and Naniwa we have guys who can beat any korean in a Bo3 on a good day.

Second of all u call Puma and Hero b -players ?
Puma has been in a slump recently but this doesnt change the fact that Puma was at least TOP20 in the world for quite an amount of time not too long ago.
He is good and a competetive Code S level player, even for Korean SC2 progaming standards

And Liquid Hero hasnt achieved anything in Korea but this may very well change in the near future. Just remember Leenock :) He had some strong results the last months without actually having reall success. Then this month he had his breakthrough and he currently is #1 Zerg in the world.
Hero could very well be on a similar upswing

Sorry for that long reply :) but i feel like your statement(subtext within your question) is as far away from the truth as it could be

@5 Jesus Christ man, you practically wrote me an article. My post wasnt in complete seriousness. But the fact is, these are just a few Koreans competing in Foreign tournaments of huge numbers, yet they still place at least top 5. And I would consider Hero and Puma B-Level compared to the likes of MMA, MVP, NesTea, Leenock Etc. Until I see a foreigner doing well in the GSL where the opposite is in effect,(and not just HuK, seeing as how hes been training and living with Koreans for more than a year) I only see the gap widening. Here's hoping I'm proven wrong, but dem Koreans just have an edge us whiteys cant keep up with.

The gap isnt as narrow as it seems like.

You're right that the gap isnt as big as the distance from US west to US east coast. But you have to consider that this game is way more easy to play than BW was. Ret has already stated that the game is just too easy, so every gold league kid can steal a game with the right strat, a bit game understanding and a bit of luck from a masters player.

Although we have Huk, Idra and Stephano the Koreans, not even the best ones, are more consistent than they are. And thats the point. Consistency. It's just a hallucination that we're thinking that the gap isnt as hugh because foreigners win some matches against koreans or win entire tounaments.

But you have to consider that foreigners win foreigner tournaments from time to time.

Whereas no foreigner could make it in the quarter finals in the gsl or other korean tournaments, but koreans always make it in the finals, altough the way is so fricking long (Puma NASL).

No need to argue bout a fact. The game mechanics cause the allegedly narrow gap and overall the koreans just kick our asses.

Man. sup with you? Its not like Protoss had a rough time for a couple of weeks/months and the finals were very close with 4:3.
Many p qualified for RO16 but the win ratio of p in RO16 was quite low.
2p 1z 1t is fine and HerO was just amazing throughout the tournament.
This silly imba shit talks, god.
If T would have won, you had been quite, but another guy would complain that T is imba. Circle of allegedely imbalance.

Let's go - TOP 2 of recently played tournaments.

IPL3: Zerg/Zerg
MLG Orlando: Toss/Toss
IEM Guangzhou: Zerg/Toss
IEM New York: Zerg/Zerg
IPL4 UK-Q: Zerg/Toss
MLG Global Invitational: Toss/Zerg
MLG Providence: Zerg/Toss
ESWC 2011: Zerg/Toss
Battle in Berlin: Zerg/Terran - WOWOWOOWOWO!! Terran on 2nd -.-
DH 2011 Winter: Toss/Terran

So many torumanets from last month.. and only 2 Terrans on 2nd place. This is joke -.-. Era of imba Terran has ended quite long time ago... It's the weakest race nowadays.

Quite nice to see that u r betting on Protoss although u listed up 10 tournaments and only 0.3 were won by a Protoss. So obviously u didnt tell your friends that protoss would make it, but terran wouldnt make it.

Besides, just looking at winner and runner-up in the 10 recent tournaments isnt representative. I.e. MLG Orlando, where 0.5 Terrans were in the Top 8. And in IPL 3 was a good mix of every race in the Top 8.
Moreover the Korean tournaments prove that Terran isnt as weak as you think.
The amount of Terrans in the GSL is just sick. GSL October was won by MMA.

And Blizzcon and AOL are worthy to note as well.
Or the series of T wins in GSL, MLG and IEM in august.

Additionally, for NASL's main tournament qualified 5/16 Terran--> average.

In this tournament Terran was runner-up as well.

And the most important fact is: You're Terran and most likely you lose a lot in the recent past. Obviously you're weakest MU is TvP, because u predicted Protoss to win, although the tournaments you listed up were won with 70% probability by zerg.

The problem is the exaggerated subjective interpretation of the latest results.
But there's a reason why MVP is just sick. Find that reason and calm down.
Its not like a tendency of imbalance is caused by the newest patch, but by players, who develop new possibilities and strategies for a certain match-up. Be part of it and improve your race.
